Lecture highlights de Young exhibit
de Young Museum docent Sharon Walton is scheduled to speak Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Los Altos library program room on “Hatshepsut: From Queen to Pharaoh,” the inaugural exhibit at the newly reopened museum.
Walton’s illustrated lecture will tell the story of Hatshepsut’s reign, a period of great artistic creativity, and will highlight the vast treasure of royal statuary and relief, monumental sculpture representing the royal court and a wide variety of ceremonial objects, finely crafted furniture, jewelry and other personal items.
Sister Cities holds T-shirt design contest
The Los Altos Sister Cities organization is sponsoring a competition for best T-shirt design for the Los Altos New Year’s Day 5K Fun Run, Walk and Roll on Jan. 1.
The winning design will be featured on T-shirts sold at the annual downtown Los Altos event.
The contest is open to all elementary school students in Los Altos. Entries must be received at Santa Rita school (attention Dorothy Dickson) by 3 p.m. Dec. 6 and should include name and home telephone number. Submissions should be no smaller than 4-by-4 inches and no larger than 7-by-9 inches and must use a maximum of two colors (no shading since it’s hard to reproduce). The theme is “Sister Cities” and should include the names of Los Altos’ Sister Cities (Bendigo, Australia; Rustington, England; Shih Lin, Taiwan; and Syktyvkar, Russia). Sister Cities and the city of Los Altos have the right to edit or alter artwork for appropriate content or reproduction purposes.

El Camino Hospital Auxiliary scholarships
El Camino Hospital Auxiliary and Foundation is offering scholarships to students pursuing careers in health fields.
Graduating high school seniors and full-time college students enrolled in an accredited California college or university may apply. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and permanent residents in the El Camino Hospital District, which includes the cities of Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, Sunnyvale and Cupertino.
Awards are granted on the basis of financial need, scholastic achievement, goals and character. Completed applications must be received in the auxiliary office no later than Jan. 27.
Applications are available at local high school career centers; local college financial aid offices; the main libraries in Los Altos, Mountain View, Sunnyvale and Cupertino; and the El Camino Hospital Auxiliary Office. Local agency collects Toys for Tots
All Horizons Travel in downtown Los Altos is serving as local collection headquarters for Toys for Tots, a national toy-collecting drive for the underprivileged spearheaded by the U.S. Marine Corps, according to Col. Roy Jones of All Horizons Travel.
Contributors can drop off toys at All Horizons Travel, 160 Main St. through Dec. l9.
