The Boy Scouts of America honored three local young men - Matt Brigham, Alex Wheatley and Matt Whitlock - last month for attaining the rank of Eagle Scout.
Only about 4 percent of those who join the Boy Scouts reach the rank of Eagle Scout. The award requires a minimum of 21 merit badges, as well as proven leadership skills, long-term commitment and a desire to serve others.
Judd Stiff, commissioner of the Pacific Skyline Council of the Boy Scouts of America, opened the Court of Honor at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) in Los Altos. Ron Packard, Los Altos city councilman, recognized two of the scouts on behalf of the city of Los Altos and read a commendation for the third scout from the city of Los Altos Hills.
With the aid of fellow scouts from troops 22, 88 and 481 of Mountain View, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills, the young men completed projects to earn the Eagle Scout honor.
Brigham, a member of the Mountain View High School marching band for three years, addressed an urgent need when band membership expanded: he led efforts to build carts so that uniforms would remain in wearable condition when the band performs away from home. “I’m really proud to have been of help,” Brigham said.
Whitlock, a member of the Heritage Oaks Ward of the LDS Church, built six heavy-duty risers for church theater productions. Whitlock is now a student at Brigham Young University (BYU).
Wheatley, also a student at BYU, constructed a sign for Los Altos Hills’ Westwind Barn. Located on Altamont Road, the sign prominently displays the barn name and also provides space for community announcements.
Scoutmaster Robert Wheatley said that an important aspect of the Eagle Scout award is a “forward-looking commitment to continue to live the ideals of scouting,” and he praised Brigham for his determination to reach his goal, Whitlock for his cheerfulness and determination and Wheatley for his ability to generate enthusiasm in others.
