Children’s House teacher Katie Ouye poses as Madame Katie the Fortune-teller as 2-year-old Colby Cook looks on.

Halloween spooks and goblins popular with elementary schoolchildren can be scary for the preschool set. This year, Children’s House Preschool on Berry Avenue offered a fun and educational alternative - the “Enchanted House,” organized specifically for its 2- to 5-year-old students and their siblings.

More than 300 children walked through a maze filled with Halloween surprises and activities such as cookie decorating, a “bat cave,” pin-the-arm-on-the-skeleton and a magic mirror.

Ella Mayon, who founded Children’s House in 1978, said small children “often get left out of activities designed for older children. We had such fun decorating the school and surprising the students with games and treats.”

Parent Katie Juran took her two children to the Enchanted House shortly after its 5:30 p.m. opening. The teachers made the biggest impression on her 4-year-old son who attends the school, Juran said. “Nick was thrilled as he recognized each one of his teachers under a wig or hat, since he doesn’t normally see them outside a classroom setting,” she said. “He also really enjoyed the sensory element of the event - there were lots of creepy things to touch.”

Mayon said, “The parents and children really loved it, so we’ll be pulling out our creativity again next Halloween.”

Children’s House Preschool is located at 770 Berry Ave., Los Altos. For more information, call 968-2102.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
