Oak Holiday Faire held this week

Oak Avenue School has scheduled its Holiday Faire for Thursday through Saturday in the multipurpose room.

The fair is open to Oak families after school on Thursday and to the public on Friday and Saturday. Shoppers can purchase handmade crafts and gifts for family and friends and have them wrapped and ready to go for the holidays. Most items are priced between 25 cents and $5.

St. Joseph holds open house

St. Joseph Catholic School has scheduled its fall open house for 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The public is invited to meet the teachers and staff, walk through classrooms and learn about admissions, academics, extracurricular activities and day care. Pinewood upper school to hold open house

Pinewood School has scheduled an open house for parents of prospective seventh- through 12th-graders from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 12 at the upper campus, 26800 Fremont Road, Los Altos Hills.

Faculty and staff will present 20-minute talks on general information, college counseling, academic disciplines, extracurricular activities and student life.

Harker School holds open house events

The Harker School, a coed, non-sectarian independent school with 1,650 students on three San Jose campuses, has scheduled informational open houses for families of prospective students and the community.

The open house event for grades K-5 will be held Sunday on the Lower School campus, 4600 Bucknall Road. The open house for prospective kindergarten families will begin at 11 a.m., and the event for grades 1-5 will begin at noon.

The open house for grades 6-8 is scheduled for 11 a.m. Dec. 4 at the new Middle School campus, 3800 Blackford Ave.

The open house for grades 9-12 is scheduled for 11 a.m. Nov. 13 at the Upper School campus, 500 Saratoga Ave. A second Upper School open house will be held at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 5.

Program highlights of the Upper School event will include performances by the award-winning Harker Conservatory, a clubs and activities fair and an overview of the curriculum and extensive college counseling program. The Lower and Middle School events will include a curriculum overview, opportunities to visit with teachers and students and information about the extensive after-school program.

Paging all readers for Santa Rita fair

Santa Rita Elementary School has scheduled its annual Scholastic Book Fair through Monday. The PTA-sponsored sale features popular books and educational products for all ages, the newest titles, award winners, classics and interactive items from more than 150 publishers.

The public is invited and all proceeds benefit the Santa Rita Library. The book fair will take place in Santa Rita’s multipurpose room, 700 Los Altos Ave. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on today through Friday and Monday, and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. There will be a special family event 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday, with prizes, refreshments and stories read aloud by teachers.

Bullying in schools topic of discussion

Girls and boys can be bullies or targets of bullying by peers. Dr. Philippe Rey, executive director of Adolescent Counseling Services of Palo Alto, and Robert Michels, school programs manager of the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics at Santa Clara University, will discuss “Bullying in Our Schools” 7:15 p.m. Nov. 10 at Graham Middle School, 1175 Castro St., Mountain View. The program is sponsored by the Los Altos-Mountain View Branch of the American Association of University Women.

Bullis Charter School enrolling for 2006-2007

Bullis Charter School begins its open enrollment period for kindergarten through sixth-grade Monday. The open enrollment period ends Jan. 20. Parents of prospective students are invited to learn more about the school at open houses 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 6 or Jan. 10.

Bullis Charter School is a small public elementary school serving Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and surrounding areas. It emphasizes individualized learning, academic excellence and enrichment through electives during and after school. Spaces are available in every grade.

De Anza College to hold gala

De Anza College has scheduled its 12th annual “A Night of Magic” gala fund-raiser, “Doorways to Your Dreams,” for Saturday in Hinson Campus Center. The gala will begin at 5 p.m. with a tasting of California wines and a silent auction of wine and winery tours, sports memorabilia, dinners at fine restaurants and golf and travel packages. The De Anza Student Woodwind Quintet, directed by music instructor Robert Farrington, will perform.

A live auction of weeklong stays in Buenos Aires and Maui, glider and helicopter rides and dinner for eight at the home of Foothill-De Anza Chancellor Martha J. Kanter will be held after the 7:15 p.m. dinner. Swingshift will round out the evening with rhythm and blues, swing and soul music.

Winning musician to perform at Foothill

Award-winning musician Linda Arnold will perform two family concerts 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday at Smithwick Theatre, Foothill College, Los Altos Hills. The Mountain View Parent Nursery School, Foothill College Child Development Department and Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District Adult Education, with support from Las Madres, sponsor the concerts.

Arnold is often described as “The Mary Poppins of Children’s Music.” She has produced many CDs enjoyed by children and families.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $13 at the door. They are available online via Pay Pal at www.mvpns.org and at Linden Tree Children’s Recordings & Books, 170 State St., Los Altos. Tickets may also be purchased from families whose children attend the preschool.

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
