The collision that killed a 55-year-old pedestrian Oct. 12 was the third this year on the busy thoroughfare that serves as a border between Mountain View and Los Altos.

John Mulligan was struck on El Camino Real by a 1994 Jeep at approximately 9:51 p.m. as he crossed from the westbound to the eastbound lane near Clark Road, said Jim Bennett, public information officer for the Mountain View Police Department. Mulligan died at the scene. The driver was a 41-year-old San Jose resident.

Police are continuing to investigate the collision. Bennett said it was still too early to comment on the circumstances, but Mulligan was not walking in a crosswalk at the time of the accident.

“We are awaiting a full report from the coroner’s office about the deceased so that we can determine if there were any mitigating circumstances,” Bennett said.

Another fatal collision occurred July 10, two blocks from the Oct. 12 accident site, at the intersection of El Camino and Escuela Avenue. A 34-year-old man, the sole occupant of a 1990 Nissan Maxima, crashed into a traffic signal pole, after running a stop sign on Escuela and fleeing a hit-and-run crash just moments before the deadly collision.

A third fatality occurred May 25 on El Camino at The Americana intersection. A female senior citizen was killed at the corner of the intersection when a truck pulling into the old Emporium site struck her, Bennett said. No arrests or citations were issued in the case, he said.

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
