2005 » Issue 43, Published on Wednesday, October 26, 2005 » Halloween Stories
By Andrea Estrada (6 years old) and Elena Estrada (8 years old)

Once upon a time there was a girl named Clara. She got lost in a sand storm on Halloween night. She found a witch, named Adora Bull, flying in the sky. The witch had a cat named Pumpkin that was dark orange and light orange. Adora Bull said that she’s under a spell that cannot be broken unless she finds a lost girl and takes her back home on the next Halloween night. Adora Bull took Clara back to The Witches’ Academy for Girls. All of the other witches thought that Clara was for their stew that night. Adora Bull told them “no,” and said that she took the girl to undo the spell. Then she showed Clara where she would sleep - in a cushy sock for a bed.

Clara said, “I miss my parents. When is Halloween going to be back?”

“Do not worry, Clara,” exclaimed Adora. “No time will pass in your land until next Halloween.”

“What will I do here?” said Clara.

“You will eat and sleep here - and do a little bit of chores each day,” said Adora Bull.

“Will I take dance here, because I took dance when I lived in my house?” asked Clara.

“Yes, you can take dance lessons after chores each day,” said Adora. “Now come on. I need to show you where the bathroom is and where we play.”

A year had passed, and it was almost Halloween night. Finally all of the witches fell asleep and turned out the lights because they did not believe in Halloween. But Clara and Adora stayed up and tiptoed down the stairs. Clara was scared, but Adora was not. She took down her broomstick and jumped on.

“Come on, Pumpkin,” she said. “It is time to go. Clara, jump on. You are going to see your parents at last.”

After an hour of riding, Clara finally spotted her house. As she reached her doorstep and stepped into her house, Adora immediately started to change. Now she looked like she had been a witch for Halloween. When Clara’s parents saw her, they asked how much candy she had. Then Clara said, “I have some candy, Mama, but can I take my friend home?” “Yes,” said Clara’s mother. And the two friends skipped off down the road.

The End
