Magic will once again be in the air when De Anza College holds its 12th annual “A Night of Magic” gala fund-raiser, “Doorways to Your Dreams,” Nov. 5.

Proceeds from the event will assist in the purchase of computers and other technological equipment for the new Student and Community Services Building, scheduled for its grand opening today.

The evening’s proceeds also support projects directed toward student success, such as peer advising and parent-student orientations. Over the past decade, “A Night of Magic” has netted more than $500,000 for a range of science, technology and creative arts programs.

Former state Sen. John Vasconcellos, who retired last year, will be honored at the event along with an outstanding De Anza graduate and a current student. Award-winning KTVU Channel 2 investigative reporter Robert Handa, a De Anza alumnus, will serve as master of ceremonies.

The event is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Hinson Campus Center with a tasting of offerings from California vintners, including Amici Cellars, Burrell School, Casa Vinicola, Cooper-Garrod, Page Mill, Picchetti, Ridge, River Run, Solis and Zayante. Guests can bid on wine and winery tours, sports memorabilia, dinners at fine restaurants and golf and travel packages in a silent auction.

The De Anza Student Woodwind Quintet, directed by music instructor Robert Farrington, will perform before the dinner scheduled for 7:15 p.m.

After dinner, a live auction will offer opportunities to bid on weeklong stays in Buenos Aires and Maui, glider and helicopter rides, and dinner for eight at the home of Foothill-De Anza Chancellor Martha J. Kanter, who established “A Night of Magic” when she was president of De Anza. Swingshift will round out the evening with rhythm and blues, swing and soul music.

Tickets are $150 per seat or $500 for two preferred seats. Table and group sponsorships are also available. Parking for the event will be available in Staff and Student Lot A.

De Anza College is located at 21250 Stevens Creek Blvd, Cupertino.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

When members of the Los Altos Village Association first created the summer movie nights, they anticipated an event that would attract more residents downtown as a way to promote business.

What they didn’t anticipate was an influx of middle schoolers, or that parents would use the weekly Friday night affair as an opportunity to drop off their children and have someone else (in this case, the Village Association) effectively watch over them.
