‘Fired at Davis’ topic of today’s library talk

Friends of the Los Altos Libraries has scheduled Hilarie Faberman, curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Cantor Art Center at Stanford University, to discuss “Fired at Davis: Figurative Ceramic Sculpture by Robert Arneson, Visiting Professors and Students at the University of California at Davis” 7:30 p.m. today at the Los Altos main library, 13 S. San Antonio Road.

Faberman organized the exhibit displayed at the Cantor Art Center through Feb. 21. It features 40 works produced over four decades by irreverent, internationally known artist Robert Arneson, visiting professors and students at UC Davis.

“Fired at Davis” offers examples of ceramic sculpture by 19 artists, including Arneson. Styles range from figurative to trompe l’oeil, super-realism, post-modernism, and the humor of David Gilhooly. Works included are on loan from the collection of Paula and Ross Turk.

Federated women next meet Nov. 2

The next Federated Woman’s Club of Los Altos’ meeting is 11 a.m. Nov. 2 at Michaels at Shoreline in Mountain View.

The meeting will include lunch and a 1 p.m. program featuring Lois Everet, a member of the San Mateo County Association of Grand Jurors. Everet will speak on “How the Grand Jury Works.”

Wild cat adventure at Foothill

Leopards, Etc., a Bay Area wild cat educational program, is bringing five of its live wild cats to Foothill College, 2 p.m. Nov. 6.

Educators Rob and Barbara Dicely will bring wild cats that may include a cougar, African leopard, cheetah, king cheetah, snow leopard, ocelot, Siberian lynx, Canada lynx, serval or caracal. Each cat is shown on stage, and information about its habits, habitat and survival issues is shared with the audience.

The presentation will take place in Room 5015, and the closest parking is in lot 6. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12.

International gift sales offered in Los Altos

Two sales of fairly traded folk art, jewelry, pottery, home decor and handicrafts from Ten Thousand Villages, a non-profit job creation and marketing program for artisans in 32 developing countries, have been scheduled in Los Altos.

Foothills Congregational Church has scheduled a sale 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 6 in the parish hall, 461 Orange Ave.

St. William Church will include items in their annual craft fair scheduled 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 13 in the parish hall, 611 S. El Monte Ave.

Ten Thousand Villages is the oldest and largest fair trade organization in the United States. Proceeds provide better nutrition, education, health care and housing for artisans’ families.

Auxiliary hosting fashion show, tea

The Palo Alto Auxiliary, Allied Arts Guild, has scheduled an “American Girl Fashion Show and Tea,” benefiting the Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford, Nov. 11 and 12 at Christ Episcopal Church, 1040 Border Road in Los Altos.

The shows are scheduled 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Friday; and 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday. A boxed tea will be served while attendees watch local girls model the historical and contemporary fashions from American Girl.

Linden Tree Children’s Recordings & Books of Los Altos will sell books and souvenirs. Raffle prizes also will be offered.

Volunteers needed at history museum

Los Altos History Museum supporters are putting out the call for museum volunteers to meet a range of needs, including docents, help in the museum store, public education and educational programs.

‘Joy of Inventing’

“The Joy of Inventing” will be the topic of Alvin Sacks’ speech at the Technology and Society Committee’s biweekly luncheon Tuesday at the Golden Wok Restaurant, 895 Villa St., Mountain View. Sacks is an engineer, retired from NASA and the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System.

Lunch is $8.50 for committee members, $9.50 nonmembers.
