Virginia Smith Faisant

Virginia (Ginny) Faisant, a long-time resident of Los Altos, died on September 8. She was 75.

Virginia was born June 10, 1930 in Shoshone, Idaho to Alta Elizabeth Gooding Smith and Daniel Sidney Smith. She graduated from Shoshone High School in 1948 and with Phi Beta Kappa honors from the University of Idaho in 1952, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma.

Virginia moved to Los Altos in 1955. In addition to raising her two daughters, she was active in the Peninsula Volunteers, the Palo Alto Auxiliary to the Children’s Hospital at Stanford (Allied Arts Guild) and the Kappa Kappa Gamma Palo Alto Alumni Association. She was an eighteen-year member of AA and was involved in the organization and planning of the meetings.

Virginia worked at Foothill College from 1973 until 1997, when she retired as a supervisor of Admissions and Records. She remained active in the Foothill retirees group, FODARA.

Virginia is survived by her daughters Kathryn Larson of Glendale, CA and Betsy Wheeler of Pullman, WA; sons-in-law Thomas Larson and Paul Wheeler; and grandchildren Brian and Alicia Larson, Scott Larson, Jeffrey Wheeler and Sarah Wheeler. She will also be missed by her nieces, nephew and her many dear friends.

The family would like to thank those friends and neighbors who supported and loved Virginia over many years. Please join us for a memorial celebration on Saturday, October 22 at 10 am to be held at 245 Mt Hamilton Avenue in Los Altos.

Memorial donations in Virginia’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice.

GEORGE AUSTIN KIEHLE

George Austin Kiehle, 67, passed away October 4 after a three-month battle with peritoneal cancer. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 37 years, Genevieve; son Erik and wife Jessica and their son Zach; son Mark and daughter Ingrid.

His brother Richard and wife Jane; brother James and wife Anne; and his sister Marie Miller and husband Jed, all from San Antonio, TX, survive him. His sister-in-law and her husband, Gretchen and John Neff of Reno, NV; his brother-in-law and his wife, Gary and Sandra Anderson of Richardson, TX and numerous nieces and nephews, also survive him.

George was born in Brownsville, TX, on September 23, 1938 into a military family and grew up in Germany, Japan and several Air Force bases in the United States. He graduated from Duke University in 1960.

Following college graduation, George received his commission through the U. S. Coast Guard OCS and obtained his wings at Pensacola NASFL. His flying career included six years with the Coast Guard, twenty years with Pan American World Airways and fifteen years with United Airlines. He flew numerous aircraft from SA-16 seaplanes to Boeing 747 jumbo jets.

George and his family have resided in Los Altos since 1970. Services will be private.

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
