Los Altos Community Foundation

The Los Altos Community Foundation has established a Hurricane Katrina Fund for residents wishing to donate locally. The foundation will act as the fiscal agent for the fund and will send money to the New Orleans Community Foundation in care of the Baton Rouge Area Foundation’s Hurricane Katrina New Orleans Recovery Fund. The two Louisiana-based foundations are working together because the New Orleans Foundation is temporarily without a home. For more information about the Baton Rouge Area Foundation’s recovery fund, visit www.braf.org. Make checks payable to “LACF-Hurricane Katrina Fund” and mail to 183 Hillview Ave., Los Altos 94022. To make a donation by VISA or MasterCard, fax cardholder name, address, city, state, home phone, e-mail address, donation amount and credit card number with expiration date to 949-0807. The foundation will provide you with a receipt. For more information, call 949-5908, ext. 5, or e-mail joanne@losaltoscf.org.

Town Crier Hurricane Relief Fund

Town Crier staff has established the Town Crier Hurricane Relief Fund. Funds will be forwarded immediately to two major agencies already in place in the disaster area: the Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity. These organizations are currently providing emergency relief throughout the 200-mile stricken area, with long-range plans for home rebuilding and assistance. Donors can also designate other relief agencies to receive all or a portion of their contribution. The fund will be channeled through fiscal agent Community Foundation Silicon Valley, which provides tax-deduction receipts for donors. As with the Holiday Fund, donors’ names will be listed in a thank-you ad in the paper in the near future. Make checks payable to the Town Crier Hurricane Relief Fund and deliver them in person or by mail to the Town Crier, 138 Main St., Los Altos 94022. To make credit-card contributions, call Leverne Cornelius, 948-9000, ext. 300.

Palo Alto Area Red Cross

The American Red Cross helped to shelter and feed more than 40,000 evacuees within 48 hours of the disaster. Since then, the number of evacuees has greatly increased. To volunteer or donate, visit www.paarc.org or call 688-0415.

Assistance League of Los Altos

As evacuees are being relocated across the country, the Assistance League of Los Altos is positioned to help school children through “Operation School Bell,” a philanthropic project of Assistance League chapters provides new clothing, shoes and personal grooming products to children from families in extreme need.

Donations can be dropped off or mailed to Assistance League Costume Bank, 169 State Street Los Altos. Make checks payable to National Assistance League, P.O. Box 6637, Burbank, CA 91510-6637. For a printable donation form for VISA or MasterCard or more information, visit assistanceleague.org. Click on “Find a chapter” to learn more about other service projects of Assistance League of Los Altos. For more information about “Operation School Bell,” visit www.operationschoolbell.org.
