Team captains from this year’s Relay For Life event gather for a group portrait, led by, bottom left, event co-chairwomen Jane Bigelow and Jeanne MacVicar.

Los Altos Relay For Life, held last June at Los Altos High School, raised more than $160,000 online, tops in the nation for such donations, announced event co-chairwoman Jeanne MacVicar.

Including all contributions, the annual benefit for the American Cancer Society grossed more than $480,000 and netted $458,471 after expenses, far exceeding this year’s Relay fund-raising goal of $375,000, MacVicar said.

MacVicar, co-chairwoman Jane Bigelow and other supporters celebrated the local Relay’s success with a Sept. 28 potluck dinner at Northern Trust in Los Altos.

Relay For Life is the largest fund-raising activity for the American Cancer Society, a national non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating cancer.

The all-volunteer event mobilizes communities such as Los Altos to volunteer in the fight against all forms of cancer. Participants walk or jog laps over a 24-hour period to raise money.

Approximately 1,200 participants on 60 teams participated in this year’s event. Festivities included food, entertainment, auctions and nearly 6,000 luminaria, lighted in tribute to cancer victims, surrounding the track.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
