In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Los Altos-area businesses, organizations and residents have come together to aid the devastated communities in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Donating money is one of the best ways to assist the relief effort, but there are additional ways to lend your support. Here’s what you can do at the local level:

Los Altos Community Foundation

Town Crier Hurricane Relief Fund

Palo Alto Area Red Cross

Assistance League of Los Altos

Donations can be dropped off or mailed to Assistance League Costume Bank, 169 State St., Los Altos. Make checks payable to National Assistance League, P.O. Box 6637, Burbank, CA 91510-6637. For a printable donation form for Visa or Mastercard or for more information, visit assistanceleague.org. Click “Find a chapter” to learn more about other service projects of Assistance League of Los Altos. For more information about “Operation School Bell,” visit www.operationschoolbell.org. For more information about making a donation, call the Assistance League of Los Altos at 948-2978.

The chapter is also researching the possibility of expanding its “Bear Hug” project to provide Teddy Bears to Hurricane Katrina survivors.

Uncommon Threads

The soon-to-open Los Altos yarn shop Full Thread Ahead is offering Katrina Teddy Bear Kits for $20 at www.fullthreadahead.com. The profits will be donated to the American Red Cross Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. For more information, call 948-9036.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
