Wildlife Conservation features Goodall
Renowned primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall is the keynote speaker at the 4th annual Wildlife Conservation Expo Saturday and Sunday at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills.
The Wildlife Conservation Network (WCN), a non-profit organization that funds community-based wildlife conservationists, is sponsoring a lineup of 12 of the world’s leading animal conservationists, who will give presentations about their efforts in Africa, Asia and South America.
In addition to Goodall, other participants include actress and WCN board member Isabella Rossellini and conservationists Dr. Gay Reinartz and Dr. Laurence Frank. WCN conservation projects represented include the Painted Dog Conservation, the Andean Cat Alliance, the Cheetah Conservation Botswana, the Cheetah Conservation Fund, the Ethiopian Wolf Conservation Program, Save the Elephants and the Snow Leopard Conservancy.
The Expo will also feature displays from local wildlife and animal welfare organizations. Wildlife art and gifts will be on sale.
Admission is $50 for both days or $30 for one day. All proceeds benefit WCN conservation programs. Expo hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. Western Horticultural Society speaker
“Tiptoe through the Meadow” is the topic of speaker John Greenlee of Greenlee Nursery at this month’s Western Horticultural Society meeting, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 12 at Covington Elementary School, 295 Covington Road, Los Altos. Doors open at 7 p.m. Visitors are welcome.
Health Faire at Pilgrim Haven
Pilgrim Haven Retirement Community has scheduled their annual Health Faire 1:30-4 p.m. Thursday at the retirement community, 373 Pine Lane, Los Altos.
Health-care educators and pharmaceutical representatives will be available to discuss senior-care issues and to offer free health screening for bone density, blood pressure, blood sugars and cholesterol. Chair massages, snacks and additional literature will be available.

CSA honoring ‘hometown heroes’
The Community Services Agency (CSA) will honor two local “Hometown Heroes,” Jim Cochran and Debbie Wu, both of whom have served the community in a variety of ways, 7:30 a.m. Oct. 21 at the Crowne Plaza Cabaña in Palo Alto.
Since 1999, “Hometown Heroes” has been an annual honor accorded to both individuals and companies for their philanthropic contributions to the local community. CSA, the event’s sponsor, is a non-profit social service provider for Mountain View, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills.
Dr. Joshua Sickel, an El Camino Hospital pathologist and well-known amateur standup comedian, will be the keynote speaker.

Tarltons to receive Pathways Hospice award
Los Altos residents Marilyn and Tig Tarlton will receive the Pathways Hospice Foundation Francis C. Arrillaga Humanitarian Award on Oct. 20 during a 7:30 a.m. breakfast at the Crowne Plaza Cabaña Hotel in Palo Alto.
Actress and humanitarian Linda Dano, a passionate advocate for caregivers, will be the guest speaker and will present the award as part of the organization’s 15th annual One From the Heart Awards.
The Tarltons have been active individual and corporate supporters of Pathways since 1991, and Tig Tarlton led in the acquisition and renovation of Pathways’ new headquarters.
Dr. Dean Edell, a Bay Area media staple and one of the nation’s first physician broadcasters, will receive the John W. Gardner Visionary Award for making complicated medical information and issues accessible to millions.
KTVU Channel 2 reporter Rita Williams, a former Los Altos resident, will receive the One From the Heart Award for her sensitive and compassionate reporting of issues affecting Bay Area residents and in particular for her memorable April 2005 segment, “Death with Dignity,” which featured Pathways Hospice patient William Cassidy.

Library lecture on de Young Museum
An illustrated lecture, “Splendor in the Park: The New de Young Museum,” is scheduled 7:30 p.m. today in the program room of the Los Altos main library.
Kay Payne will discuss the renovated de Young Museum, scheduled to reopen Oct. 15. She will highlight the building’s architecture and gardens and include views of the new installations for the art collections and recent acquisitions.
