Tig and Marilyn Tarlton of Los Altos have been active in Pathways Hospice since 1991.

Los Altos residents Marilyn and Tig Tarlton will receive the Pathways Hospice Foundation Francis C. Arrillaga Humanitarian Award on Oct. 20 during a 7:30 a.m. breakfast at the Crowne Plaza Cabaña Hotel in Palo Alto.

Actress and humanitarian Linda Dano, who is a passionate advocate for caregivers, will be the guest speaker and will present the award as part of the organization’s 15th annual One From the Heart Awards.

The Tarltons have been active individual and corporate supporters of Pathways since 1991, and Tig Tarlton led in the acquisition and renovation of Pathways’ new headquarters.

The challenges faced by hospice families are causes important to the Tarltons since the death of their daughter, Lori.

Dr. Dean Edell, a Bay Area media staple and one of the nation’s first physician broadcasters, will receive the John W. Gardner Visionary Award for making complicated medical information and issues accessible to millions.

KTVU Channel 2 reporter Rita Williams, a former Los Altos resident, will receive the One From the Heart Award for her sensitive and compassionate reporting of issues affecting Bay Area residents and in particular for her memorable April 2005 segment, “Death with Dignity,” which featured Pathways Hospice patient William Cassidy.

Corporate sponsors of the event include Diamond Sponsor Rambus Inc. of Los Altos, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, El Camino Hospital, Sequoia Hospital/CHW and Stanford Hospital and Clinics. Contributions to the event support unique programs of Pathways not covered by insurance, care for the uninsured, the Pathways KIDS program for children with life-threatening illnesses and the individual needs of patients and families.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
