Los Altos-area businesses, community organizations and residents continued their efforts last week to aid communities in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama following the Aug. 29 devastation brought by Hurricane Katrina. Donating money is one of the best ways to assist the relief effort, but there are additional opportunities to lend your support. Here’s what you can do at the local level:

Los Altos Community Foundation

Town Crier Hurricane Relief Fund

Palo Alto Area Red Cross

Assistance League of Los Altos

Chapters are responding to the immediate clothing needs of children entering their school districts.

Donations can be dropped off or mailed to Assistance League Costume Bank, 169 State St., Los Altos.

Make checks payable to National Assistance League, P.O. Box 6637, Burbank, CA 91510-6637.

For a printable donation form for VISA or Mastercard or for more information, visit www.assistanceleague.org. Click “Find a chapter” to learn more about other service projects of Assistance League of Los Altos.

For more information about making a donation, call the Assistance League of Los Altos at 948-2978.

Uncommon Threads

A donation from an anonymous benefactor has made it possible to supply yarn, needles and patterns for knitters of all skill levels, from beginner to expert, who would like to make a sweater from washable wool or acrylic yarn.

If you have accumulated a lot of extra yarn over the years, here is an opportunity to use your yarn stash for a good cause. An organization to distribute the sweaters has not yet been identified. For more information, call 941-1815.

Full Thread Ahead

You can donate a completed teddy bear back to Full Thread Ahead, which will send them to Kiwanis Club chapters in affected areas for children who need them. Full Thread Ahead will pay for shipping.

For more information, call 948-9036.

Maddalena’s Restaurant

For more information, call 321-5875 or visit www.maddalenasrestaurant.com.

El Camino Hospital

The foundation plans to appoint some of the contributors to a committee to advise the foundation board on allocating the funds. The foundation plans to distribute 100 percent of the funds to local and national relief agencies providing direct support to hurricane survivors in the Gulf Coast area and those who have relocated to this area.

In addition, El Camino CEO Lee Domanico said the hospital has committed to support employees volunteering for disaster relief stints of up to two weeks.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
