CSA honoring ‘Hometown heroes’

The Community Services Agency (CSA) will honor two local “Hometown Heroes,” Jim Cochran and Debbie Wu, both of whom have served the community in a variety of ways, 7:30 a.m. Oct. 21 at the Crowne Plaza CabaƱa in Palo Alto.

Since 1999, “Hometown Heroes” has been an annual honor accorded to both individuals and companies for their philanthropic contributions to the local community. CSA, the event’s sponsor, is a non-profit, social service provider for Mountain View, Los Altos and Los Altos Hills.

Dr. Joshua Sickel, an El Camino Hospital pathologist and well-known amateur standup comedian, will be the keynote speaker.

Help One Child has 5K walk/run

Help One Child, an organization that finds homes and helpers for foster children in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties through local churches, is holding its fourth annual 5K walk/run 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 1 on the grounds of Union Presbyterian Church, 858 University Ave., Los Altos. Help One Child is encouraging supporters to walk and solicit donations for the cause of abused, abandoned, neglected or drug-exposed children and is especially encouraging children to participate.

The event has a carnival theme and is geared for the whole family, with an array of games, crafts, refreshments, face painting, and an inflatable slide and bounce house for children. Parents can try their luck at the raffle with enticing prizes donated by local businesses, hotels, outdoor adventure companies and restaurants.

de Young museum featured in talk

With the opening of the new de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park imminent, the Los Altos Library is sponsoring an illustrated lecture,”Splendor in the Park: The New de Young Museum,” 7:30 tonight in the Program Room of the Los Altos Library.

Guest speaker Kay Payne will highlight the building’s architecture and its gardens and will include views of the new installation of the art collections and recent art acquisitions.

Wild cat adventure

A “Wild Cat Adventure” presentation, featuring five live wild cats from Leopards, Etc., is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills.

Attendees may view a cougar, African leopard, cheetah, king cheetah, snow leopard, ocelot, Siberian lynx, Canada lynx, serval and/or caracal.

Each cat is shown on the stage as information about its habits, habitat and survival issues is shared with the audience. The event, presented by Rob and Barbara Dicely, offers an opportunity to learn what can be done to help save these animals from extinction.

Looking for LEADers

The Los Altos Community Foundation is accepting applications for the 2005-2006 Leadership Education ADvancement series. LEAD is a community involvement education course aimed at Los Altos/Los Altos Hills area residents interested in meeting current leaders, learning about the programs that support today’s community and becoming involved. Since 1996, more than 150 people have completed the program.

Meetings are scheduled 7-9 p.m., the last Monday of the month from Sept. 26 through May (except December). Each session is held in a community location related to the topic.

Marge Bruno and Ginny Lear, volunteers from the foundation board, present the eight-session course. Subjects include local government, education, business, the library, history museum, social services and health, recreation, youth activities, the arts and community service organizations. Volunteer opportunities are highlighted.

MV library centennial celebration

The Mountain View Library’s centennial celebration culminates in a daylong birthday party beginning 10 a.m. Saturday, when Mayor Matt Neely will host local dignitaries at a morning ceremony. The occasion will be marked by the planting of a crabapple tree in Pioneer Park to commemorate the tree that stood in front of the old library building.

Festivities will include storytelling, music and a reunion of library patrons who gathered for library storytimes as children. For more information, call the library’s reference desk, 903-6337.

Roadrunners need more help

Roadrunners is an El Camino Hospital-based volunteer group whose members provide transportation for seniors who can no longer drive. The group needs more volunteer drivers. To volunteer, call 988-7651.

Change to annual MVHS alumni picnic

Organizers of the annual Old Mountain View High School Eagle Alumni Picnic held at Cuesta Park the first Saturday in October each year have announced a change.

Beginning this year, all alumni classes, instead of selected years, will gather in the large barbecue area with its stationary tables. It is located at the left rear of the park off the parking area and next to the volleyball court.

The barbecue area will be laid out in increments by graduation year and will include marked sections for teachers, and Los Altos and Awalt High School participants.

There is ample parking on Cuesta Drive at the front of the park and in both parking lots.

There will be music and a raffle.

The picnic will be held from 10 a.m. to sundown.

Residents invited to Cupertino’s 50th

Los Altos residents are invited to join in the fun in honor of Cupertino’s 50th anniversary at the Cupertino Golden Jubilee celebration 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Civic Center Plaza on Torre Avenue in Cupertino.

Presented by the city of Cupertino, Cupertino Rotary and the Cupertino Chamber of Commerce, the two-day party features fine arts and crafts, a Kids Zone, History Lane, and music and dancing with top local bands, including the Garage Band, Taiko, and the Joe Sharino Band.

Also featured is a variety of international food booths, local wineries and microbrews. Admission and parking are free.
