NASA Ames hosts Sally Ride festival
The Sally Ride Science Festival for fifth- through eighth-grade girls is scheduled 11 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Oct. 2 at the NASA Ames Research Center at Moffett Field in Mountain View.
The festival provides an opportunity to meet and listen to Sally Ride, the first American woman in space; attend workshops by women in professions ranging from aerospace engineer to veterinarian; and visit a street fair with experiments, food and music. Parents and teachers are welcome.

CUSD offers seminars on Asian American child
Helen Lei, Ph.D., of Asian Americans for Community Involvement has scheduled several four-session workshops for parents of children in the Cupertino Union School District.
“Raising an Asian-American Child, Level I” will be held 7-9 p.m. today, Sept. 21 and 28, and Oct. 5. All sessions are scheduled for the district board room at 10301 Vista Drive, Cupertino. All classes will be taught in Mandarin and are free. Enrollment is limited to 35.

TV production course for middle schoolers
KMVT Community Television will hold workshops 3:30-5:30 p.m. twice weekly for six weeks to introduce sixth- through eighth-graders to video production. Students will use KMVT’s studio and equipment to gain basic skills in screenwriting, storyboarding, camerawork, sound design, acting, directing and editing as they produce two studio and field videos that will be broadcast on KMVT 15.
Four sessions will be offered September through December. The cost is $250 per attendee.

Cupertino fund-raiser to be ‘Tropical Dream’
The Cupertino Educational Endowment Foundation has scheduled its annual fund-raising gala for 5:30 p.m. to midnight Saturday at the Cypress Hotel, corner of Stevens Creek and De Anza blvds. The theme is “Tropical Dreams,” and guests are invited to dress in tropical chic.
The event features tropical appetizers from favorite local restaurants, live entertainment presented by the Halau Na Wai Ola Polynesian Troupe, dinner catered by Park Place Restaurant, dancing, casino, live and silent auctions, and games, prizes and surprises. Proceeds will benefit arts and technology programs at the district’s 25 schools. This year’s fund-raising goal is $125,000.
Those who cannot attend the event but want to participate in the gala auction can bid online at www.ceefcares.org through Friday. The final online bids will be the opening bids at the event.
The event committee is looking for volunteers to distribute and post posters, make decorations and set up on the day of the gala.

Los Altos Parent Preschool has scheduled a seminar on personal safety for children through 5 years old, 7-9:30 p.m. Oct. 20 in the Los Altos High School Eagle Theater, 201 Almond Ave. Parents, guardians, teachers and other school personnel are encouraged to attend.
