RICHARD FRANKLIN JENSEN
Richard Franklin Jensen was born on October 14, 1927 in Wenatchee, WA, the second of two sons to Edward Victor and Irene Oretha Jensen. After graduating from Wenatchee High School in 1946, where he played on the championship football team and the trumpet as a member of the Drum & Bugle Corp, he joined the Army and served his country on a tour of duty in Nagasaki Japan until June 1947.
Following his discharge he attended Washington State College (now University) in Pullman, WA where he met his wife and life long companion Dorothy Lou Wylie. He graduated with a BA in Fine Arts in February 1952, married and started his 26 year career as a cartographer with the U.S. Geological Survey, which began a life long interest in travel, moving his family to different assignments every six months in the nine western state region and finally settling in Santa Clara, CA in 1959.
In 1963, he designed and built the family home in Los Altos Hills, CA where he lived the reminder of his life. He was an avid football fan supporting Washington State College, Stanford and the 49′ers. He had the good fortune to attend when both of his college teams played in the Rose Bowl and many of the five time world champions’ 49′ers home games.
He enjoyed creating works of art through the media of pen and ink, oils, and watercolors. His most treasured activity was to travel, which took him throughout Europe, annual visits to Hawaii, the Caribbean, the South Pacific, and his last international trip to Australia and New Zealand for the holiday season 2004. He was deeply appreciative of the world’s architecture and works of art. In all things, whether it be in loving his wife and family, fine dining, the symphony, opera, good living or working around his home, Richard demonstrated the care of a great craftsmen in a life well lived.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Dorothy; children Richard Todd, Susan Dorothy, Catherine Beth; daughter-in-law Pamela Struck; son-in-law Kevin Purcell; grandchildren Amanda and Christopher Purcell. His parents and older brother James predeceased him.
He passed away peacefully in his home, on August 24, 2005 shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. He was 77 years old.
BERTIE SHAW
Bertie Shaw, age 96, long time Mountain View resident passed from this life on Thursday, September 1, 2005, surrounded by her family. Mrs. Shaw was born in Franklin County, Arkansas. She is survived by her family: daughter Eddie Shaw, son Herman Shaw and his wife Mary Jo; three grandchildren and their spouses: Myra and Alan Gishi, Victor and Ellie Martindale, Warren and Sherril Shaw and nine great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Shaw was the widow of Luther Shaw and was pre-deceased by seven siblings.
For more than thirty years, Mrs. Shaw supervised the high school cafeterias, beginning with Mountain View, opening the cafeterias at Los Altos and Awalt High Schools. She retired as Food Services Director for the District in 1974.
Visitation was held at the Los Altos Chapel of Spangler Mortuaries, 399 So. San Antonio Road, Los Altos from 4:30 until 8:00 PM on Tuesday, September 6, 2005. Interment was private.
A Memorial service was held at Bethel Church, 1201 So. Winchester Boulevard, San Jose on Monday, September 12, 2005 at 7:30 PM. Donations to the Heart Beat Fund for the Needy at Bethel Church, or the American Cancer Society, Silicon Valley Central Coast Region, 1715 S. Bascom Ave. Ste. 100, Campbell, CA 95008 is preferred.
CDR. E. A. MALCOLM (SINBAD)
Cdr. E.A. Malcolm (Sinbad) formally of Los Altos, died at his home in San Jose on Friday, September 2. He and his family moved to Los Altos in 1962, when he retired from the Navy. Following the death of his wife Marian in 1994, he moved to the “Villages” in 1998 in the Evergreen district of San Jose where he enjoyed the company of lifelong Navy friends and new ones he made on the golf course.
A “Celebration” of his life will be held on September 18 in the Sunset room at the Villages Golf Country Club from 12:30 until 3:00.

E. LAURENCE SCHOTT
Born in Santa Clara on November 19, 1931 to Edgar & Mary Schott, Larry passed away at home with his family by his side on August 29, 2005 after a very brief illness. A loving husband, father and brother, Larry is survived by Joanne, his wife of 41 years, and his seven children, Susan (Hakan), Charles (Eve), Michael (Leslie), Julie (David), Tommy (Jami), Jennifer, and Brian (Annie). He was a loving grandfather (Pa) to 13 grandchildren: Nurhan & Ela, John, Daniel & Alexander, Caroline, Sarah & Katie, Joey, Christina, Anthony & Tommy, and Sam. He is also survived by his mother, Mary Schott, his sister Dianne (Gene) Ravizza, and his brother Steve (Pat) Schott.
A retired partner of MacKay & Somps Civil Engineers, Larry contributed greatly to the development of the Santa Clara Valley. Throughout his life, Larry was an active member of the Santa Clara Bronco Bench and served in many capacities with Serra International. He served on the Board of Directors of Foundation for Hope, St. Francis High School and St. Patrick Seminary Board of Regents.
Larry was recognized by all who knew him as a true Catholic Gentleman of great compassion and faith, with a special ability to bring out the best in others by his word and example. He was an active member of St. Simon’s Parish, always keeping his faith at the center of his life, with the need to promote religious vocations being an ever-present call. Larry’s kindness and gentle, playful spirit seemed determined to shine a light on our sadness and feelings of loss during his illness.
A Vigil and Mass were held at Saint Simon Church in Los Altos last week, where Larry and his family have been parishioners for 36 years.
