Los Altos-area organizations and residents are pledging their support in the wake of Hurricane Katrina’s devastation in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Donating money is the best way to help relief efforts and is most effective through well-established charities.

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

Los Altos students can raise money through Pennies for Patients for cancer patients affected by Hurricane Katrina. “Light the Night” walks will be held in Santa Rosa on Sept. 30 and in Menlo Park on Oct. 8. Last year, approximately 5,000 walkers raised $727,000 through “Light the Night” in Northern California. To register or for more information, call 877-LLS-CURE or visit www.LightTheNight.org/ncd16.

“If we could get 200 people (to attend),” Maddalena said, “we could send a big check down there.”

He has planned live entertainment and a complete dinner for the evening.

“Every night I go home and I think, ‘We have everything,’” he said. “They’ve lost everything. We thought we’d do something to share what we have.”
