Tiger Woods didn’t show up, but 132 other golfers did Aug. 8 for the 16th annual Los Altos Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament.

“It was another great tournament, with some very spirited competition at a spectacular location,” said Kurt Hueg,

co-chairman with Kathy Brown of the event at the Los Altos Golf & Country Club.

First place honors in the scramble format went to Hannelore Blanchard, Dave Blockhus, Jim Milliken and Charlie Marinelli. The second place scramble team sponsored by BMW of Mountain View included Rick Gebers, Dave Moffat, Joe Wahler and Steve Bisset.

Rich Nielsen and Jeff Myers captured top honors in the two-person best ball category. Walt Joyce and Harvey Berger were second-place winners in this category. Gary Young won the closest-to-the-pin contest, while longest drive prizes went to Brad Roeber and Cammie Brodie.

An awards reception buffet was held on the clubhouse patio. It included a silent auction and several prize drawings. Proceeds from the annual fund-raiser support chamber and community programs, according to Julie Rose, the chamber’s executive director.

Heritage Bank of Commerce was the title sponsor of the event. Two hosting corporate sponsors, Los Altos Marriott Residence Inn and Rambus Inc., provided the lunch and an award reception buffet. Additional corporate sponsors included American Express Tax & Business Services; Andrew K. Mills Plumbing Inc.; Armadillo Willy’s Ranch Grill; Brown Insurance Services of Los Altos; Campi Properties Inc.; Chef Chu’s; Club at Pronghorn, Bend, Ore.; Elmengard, Inc.; Knight & Company Bookkeeping and Tax Services Inc.; Los Altos Garbage Company; Los Altos Optometric Group; Lozano Brushless Car Wash; POS Card Systems; Rees Properties Inc.; and Reynolds Casas & Riley LLP.

A MINI Convertible donated by BMW of Mountain View and a Rolex watch donated by Gleim Jewelers were the hole-in-one prizes; they went unclaimed, as did the $5,000 prize for the chipping and putting contests and the $1 million shoot-out. Glaze Capital Management sponsored the putting contest. State Farm Insurance/Jim Flynn and Al Ward sponsored the chipping contest and the $1 million hole-in-one shoot-out.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
