Live music, food, car show highlight 4th annual picnic

Image from article LA celebrates summer\'s end with community bash

Los Altos is hosting a final summer bash for residents and their guests Sunday at the fourth annual Community Picnic.

The event includes three entertainment stages, live music, dance performances, a classic car show, museum tours, kid and senior zones and a barbecue lunch prepared by local firefighters.

High school students plan to battle it out on the court and the stage in two competitions: a dodge ball tournament and a battle of the bands contest, both organized by the city’s Youth Commission.

Where else can residents challenge the mayor to a game of bocci ball or take a seat on a police patrol bike? Organizers say the event is an opportunity for locals to get to know their community and neighbors.

Last year’s picnic attracted 1,000 guests.

The picnic is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday in the City Civic Center off San Antonio Road and Hillview Avenue near the main library.

Main Stage

Mark Aitken

Classical guitar

Mark Aitken has been playing guitar for 12 years. After spending his early years playing rock and blues on the electric guitar, the Los Altos resident switched to the classical guitar when he moved to Santa Cruz for school in 1997. Aitken received a bachelor’s degree in music with honors from the UC Santa Cruz in 2001. He has further developed his knowledge of the guitar by expanding his repertoire and improvising in various world styles.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
