The boards of trustees of several local school districts will see hotly contested races this fall.
The terms of longtime Los Altos School District trustees President Jay Thomas, Vice President Victor M. Reid III and Duane Roberts expire in November. The election to fill their seats on the board may signal the return of Francis La Poll to local politics. The former Los Altos mayor, councilmember and member of the LASD Citizens’ Advisory Committee for Finance is among the six individuals who pulled papers by Monday morning. Only Kathryn Uhlir filed by press time.
Having until 5 p.m. today to enter the competition are La Poll, David Luskin, a parent volunteer in the district; Mark Goines, until recently the head of the Los Altos Educational Foundation; Tammy Logan, a parent volunteer; and David Pefley, an educational foundation board member.
In the Cupertino Union School District, the terms of President Pearl Cheng, Vice-President Gary McCue and Ben Liao will expire this fall. All three incumbents filed to run again. Lynette Lee Eng and Susan McGhie are running for the board as well.
The terms of President John Barton and Cathy Kroymann in the Palo Alto Unified School District expire this year. Barb Mitchell, Claude Ezran and Steve Mullen have filed to run. Donna Tom has pulled papers. The filing period has been extended to 5 p.m. today.
In the Foothill-De Anza Community College District, President Sandy Hay’s and Paul Fong’s terms expire in November. Former Sunnyvale Mayor Julia Miller; Laura Casas Frier, a member of the FHDA Board of Directors; Bruce Swenson, a member of the Foothill Commission; and Fong have filed to run. The deadline for filing has been extended to 5 p.m. today.
No terms are expiring in Fremont Union High, Mountain View-Los Altos Union High and Mountain View-Whisman school districts or on the Santa Clara County Board of Education.
