Here are some services offered at the Los Altos Senior Center, 97 Hillview Ave., 947-2797:

• Council on Aging, HICAP: Insurance counseling the third Tuesday of every month with Roy Ito. Call senior center for appointments.

• In-Home Repair Service: for minor home repairs. Reserved for Los Altos and Los Altos Hills residents only at no charge.

• Blood pressure check: second and fourth Fridays each month, 9:30-11:30 a.m., with Ginny Knell and Mary Seidman, volunteer nurses.

• Hearing screening: second Wednesday of every month, 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Call senior center for appointments.

• Medical loan closet: walkers, shower and commode items, canes offered at no charge. Wheelchairs available for a $50 deposit.

• Foot Doctor: third Monday of the month, 9 a.m. Cost per visit is $30 per half-hour. Call center for appointments.

• Birthday bingo: 1 p.m. on the third Friday of each month.

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
