Looking for LEADers
The Los Altos Community Foundation is accepting applications for the 2005-2006 Leadership Education ADvancement series. LEAD is a community involvement education course aimed at Los Altos and Los Altos Hills residents interested in meeting current leaders, learning about the programs that support today’s community and how to become involved. Since 1996, more than 150 people have completed the program.
Meetings are scheduled 7-9 p.m., the last Monday of the month from Sept. 26 through May (except December). Each session is held in a community location related to the topic.
Marge Bruno and Ginny Lear, volunteers from the foundation board, present the eight-session course. Subjects include local government, education, business, the library, history museum, social services and health, recreation, youth activities, the arts and community service organizations. Volunteer opportunities are highlighted.

International festival of food Sept. 10-11
The Antiochian Orthodox Church of the Redeemer is holding its annual International Festival of Foods, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 10 and noon to 8 p.m. Sept. 11 at the church, 380 Magdalena Ave., Los Altos Hills.
The annual event features an assortment of Mediterranean cuisine, including shaved lamb and beef in pita bread, falafel sandwiches, tabbouleh salad and homemade baklava. The event also offers entertainment, including cultural dance troops, and games and crafts for children.
Vendors will be selling handmade crafts and participants can enter a raffle for a 2005 C230 Mercedes-Benz.
Parking will be available at nearby Foothill College on El Monte Road.
Proceeds will go toward funding construction of the new church sanctuary.

Adoption event today in MV
The Child Abuse Prevention Center is holding its first Adopt-A-Family/Safe Families Kick-Off Event 6-8 p.m. today at the Americana Ballroom, 707 Continental Circle, Mountain View.
The center last year served more than 15,000 children and caregivers through its adopt-a-family, training and education and volunteer case aide programs. MV library centennial celebration
The Mountain View Library’s centennial celebration culminates in a daylong birthday party beginning 10 a.m. Sept. 24, when Mayor Matt Neely will host local dignitaries at a morning ceremony. The occasion will be marked by the planting of a crabapple tree in Pioneer Park to commemorate the tree that stood in front of the old library building. LAH seeks candidates for fire commissioner
The Los Altos Hills County Fire District has a vacancy for one fire commissioner. Only LAH residents are eligible.
The commission generally meets at 7:30 p.m. every third Tuesday of the month at the fire station on the Foothill College campus.
Letters of interest may be sent to: Board of Commissioners, Los Altos Hills County Fire District, P.O. Box 1766, Los Altos 94023-1766. Deadline for receipt of letters is Aug. 26. The letters will be presented at the Sept. 20 meeting.

Roadrunners need more help
Roadrunners is an El Camino Hospital-based volunteer group whose members provide transportation for seniors who can no longer drive. The group needs more volunteer drivers. To volunteer, call 988-7651.
Change to annual MVHS alumni picnic
Organizers of the annual Old Mountain View High School Eagle Alumni Picnic that is held at Cuesta Park the first Saturday in October each year have announced a change.
Beginning this year, all alumni classes, instead of selected years, will gather in the large barbecue area with its stationary tables. It is located at the left rear of the park off the parking area and next to the volleyball court.
The barbecue area will be laid out in increments by graduation year and include marked sections for teachers, Los Altos and Awalt High School participants. There is ample parking on Cuesta Drive at the front of the park and in both parking lots.
There will be music and a raffle.
The picnic will be held from 10 a.m. to sundown.

De Anza Kiwanis is selling entertainment savings book to raise funds for youth and senior charities and activities. The fundraising campaign begins Thursday and will continue through Dec. 15.

Hidden Villa accepting donations of cars
Hidden Villa, 26870 Moody Road, Los Altos Hills, is accepting car donations. Proceeds provide scholarships for summer camp and the Hidden Villa Environmental Education programs for K-6 grade classes.
The farm needs volunteers one morning a week to guide the nearly 20,000 schoolchildren expected to visit the farm this school year.
Volunteer times are Tuesday to Friday mornings, for at least two hours.

Los Altos Voices for Peace meets 7 p.m. the second Monday of every month at Foothills Congregational Church Learning Center, 451 Orange Ave., Los Altos. Residents of both Los Altos Hills and Los Altos are invited.

LA museum exhibit salutes U.S. flag
Flags and popular interpretations of flag motifs are on view at the Los Altos History Museum through Jan. 8, 2006. Some local collections of flag-themed artifacts are displayed at the J. Gilbert Smith House.
There are also three special summertime crafts events for 6- to 12-year-olds. Scheduled July weekday afternoons, the hands-on activities include primitive painting and other simple arts and crafts in a “make ‘n’ take” format.
This summer’s “Family Film Night” at 7 p.m., Aug. 4, will feature the classic movie “The Music Man.” Bring your picnic dinner to enjoy on the patio before the film starts at 8 p.m. The museum will provide picnic tables, chairs, free popcorn and refreshments.
