Town Crier Report

Among the many events at this year’s Los Altos Community Picnic, set for Aug. 28 at the Los Altos Civic Center, is an exhibit of classic automobiles and trucks dating from the early 20th Century.

More than 25 cars will be on display, including a Franklin, Hudsons, Ford Model A’s and T’s, a collection of vintage sports cars from the 1930s through the 1960s and many others.

Of unique interest this year, according to exhibit organizers, are some early recreational vehicles.

Tom Williams plans to bring a 1935 travel trailer towed behind his 1934 Packard.

The Bowlus travel trailer was the first all-metal streamlined trailer, first designed in 1933.

Complementing the travel trailer is Steve and Kathy Pedone’s 1948 Chrysler Traveler. Many would consider this an early SUV.

“If you want to see a lot of automotive history and many vehicles you would have to go to a museum to see, don’t miss it,” said organizer Bob Mabe. “Plus it’s free and there’s lots of other stuff for the entire family.”

The picnic, scheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., features food and entertainment, city displays and games for children. The civic center is located at 97 Hillview Ave.
