A treasure trove of great bargains lies hidden away in the shops of Los Altos and Mountain View. If you know where to look, you can find some first-rate deals on exceptional, high-quality merchandise.

Walk down a shady corridor and through the front door of Repeter, and you are transported to a charming Parisian boutique of the 1950s.

Set amidst the tasteful pink décor of vintage furniture is a collection of lovely, carefully chosen clothes, shoes, hats, purses and jewelry.

Most items are moderately priced. Search the designer rack for that unforgettable outfit.

The Goodwill boutique store has some terrific bargains - especially on Senior Tuesdays when all the merchandise is 25 percent off for people 55 and older. The clothes are all in top condition. Best of all, every day Goodwill marks a different category of merchandise 25 percent off. Check out the clearance rack where everything is 50 percent off. Look for men’s ties for $1.99.

The charming volunteers can help you find a wide variety of reasonably priced clothing from tasteful basic daywear to designer fashions. The store carries ladies’ petite through plus sizes. On the last Thursday of every month, the shop has a 50 percent off sale on selected clothing. Check out their costume jewelry case and their furniture annex for great buys.

Thai Silks

It’s a treat to walk through Thai Silks admiring the colorful silk brocades, lovely embroidered chiffons and soft taffetas. If you sew, Thai Silks has a closeout section of 100 percent silk fabrics for 30 percent to 50 percent off their original prices, plus well-priced remnants for covering a chair or fashioning a scarf for a gift. Look for a rack of iridescent silk scarves starting at $3.25 and silk pillow covers for $6.85. If you are a quilter, check out their scrap bags for $2 each.

Get ready for summer fun with used golf clubs starting at $4.99 or used tennis racquets starting at $9.99.

If you need exercise equipment for physical rehabilitation, Play It Again has used equipment for sale for half the retail price of new equipment. The store has a 30-day return policy on all equipment.

When your rehabilitation is complete, you can sell your equipment back to them. The store also buys used equipment or accepts used equipment for trade-in credit for other machines.

If you are looking for a gift for your grandchildren, visit House of Forgotten Treasures. Located in a charming old home, it has two rooms of adorable gently used clothing, books, toys and equipment all in excellent condition and reasonably priced.

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
