Marian G. Miller was born on June 29, 1914. Her parents were Warren A. and Mary B. Miller of Puyallup, WA. A graduate of Puyallup High School, she went on to earn degrees in Business and Physical Education in 1938 at Washington State University. After several years as an educator in the state of Washington, she also earned a Master of Nursing degree from Yale University. She served as a nursing supervisor in Chicago, then was employed by the National League for Nursing in New York as a facilitator of nursing school accreditation. In 1960, she joined the San Francisco State University School of Nursing faculty as professor. There she taught medical-surgical nursing and nursing leadership until her retirement in 1977. Upon her retirement, she was honored as Professor Emeritus of Nursing. She also received the Faculty Distinguished Service Award from San Francisco State University. After her retirement, she was appointed to coordinate the nursing department’s continuing education.

Marian’s retirement years were active as she continued a dedicated and loving family member and friend to many. She involved herself even more extensively in church service and community volunteerism. She had a special interest in world travel which she enjoyed with her dear friend and living companion, F. Marian Roberts, who preceded her in death in 2004.

JOANNE LYNBERG

Joanne Lynberg, a resident of Los Altos, passed away on July 13 after a brief but hard fought battle with cancer. Known as Jodie by her friends, she is survived by her three children, Julie, Mike and Doug, and eight grandchildren. She will be remembered as a kind and loving mother, grandmother and friend.

Born in Iowa, Joanne moved to California in the late 1950s when her husband, Lee, who passed away in 1996, was discharged from the United States Air Force and attended UCLA. After several years in Southern California, they moved to Palo Alto in 1963, and later to Los Altos. Lee was part of the area’s high tech industry from its pioneering days until his retirement in the early 1990’s.

An avid tennis player and Stanford football fan through good years and bad, Joanne also volunteered for a period of time as a Pink lady at Stanford Hospital. Decades later, she was grateful to the medical staff at the same hospital, who did everything they could to extend her life.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor her memory do so with a gift to the American Cancer Society or Christian Children’s Fund.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
