Anne Corwin, fellowship chairwoman, and Elaine Hanson, July Fourth committee coordinator, prepare for the National Bell Ringing Ceremony on Independence Day at Los Altos Lutheran Church.

Monday, the Los Altos Lutheran Church has scheduled a community event as part of the National Bell Ringing Ceremony.

At exactly 11 a.m. PDT thousands of bells across the country will toll 13 times in honor of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Participants are invited to sing along to patriotic songs played by the Rejoicing Ringers, the bell choir at Los Altos Lutheran Church.

After the program, there will be an old-fashioned community barbecue picnic on the lawn. Games and activities will be available for children.

Los Altos Lutheran Church is located at 460 S. El Monte Ave., at the corner of Cuesta Drive and El Monte.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

When members of the Los Altos Village Association first created the summer movie nights, they anticipated an event that would attract more residents downtown as a way to promote business.

What they didn’t anticipate was an influx of middle schoolers, or that parents would use the weekly Friday night affair as an opportunity to drop off their children and have someone else (in this case, the Village Association) effectively watch over them.
