The Los Altos driver who allegedly ran a red light and critically injured a bicyclist in Palo Alto May 25 postponed entering a plea Friday.
Craig Borlik, 40, is scheduled to appear in court with his new attorney Robert Karey July 20 to enter his plea. He appeared in court Friday to waive his time right, according to the District Attorney’s Office in Palo Alto.
Borlik faces felony DUI, hit-and-run and child endangerment charges.
The local real estate agent was allegedly driving drunk with his 3-year-old son in his black Ford Expedition when he ran a red light on W. Charleston Road at around 4:10 p.m. and struck 72-year-old bicyclist Robert Beebe.
Palo Alto police said Borlik fled the area without stopping. His vehicle carried Beebe about 40 feet.
Beebe was taken to Stanford Hospital with critical injuries to his head, torso and legs.
The Palo Alto department’s Specialized Traffic Accident Reconstruction team was collecting evidence from the scene when about an hour later a resident called to report a possibly impaired driver passed out on the front stoop of a residence a few blocks away on El Camino Real. The three-year-old boy was left unattended inside the vehicle, parked curbside in front of the same home. The vehicle had fresh, front-end damage, police said.
Borlik and his son were not injured.
Beebe’s colleagues said the Sunnyvale man would regularly ride his bike to and from his office at the Stanford Institute for International Studies.
Many did not know he had been struck until he failed to show up at work the following morning.
Borlik’s brother Steve, who lives in Los Altos, said Craig was taking care of his two sons while his wife was out of town.
“My heart goes out to all those who are so terribly affected by this tragedy. Innocent bystanders, husbands, wives, parents, siblings and the children … all are made victims when it comes to the grips of alcohol. I pray for all involved,” Steve said.
