2005-2006 MVLA calendar approved

Students in the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District next year will end first semester three days before Christmas and start second semester 10 days into the new year.

After hearing that the District Teachers’ Association strongly favored that schedule, four trustees voted for the calendar revision and one abstained at last week’s board meeting. The first semester will end Dec. 22, teachers will return for in-service training Jan. 8-9, and students will return Jan. 10. The last day of school will be June 12, 2006.

The new schedule allots 83 instructional days to the first semester and 97 to the second, for the full 180 instructional days required for K-12 schools.

Open house for summer math camp

Classic Math School has scheduled an open house where parents and children can learn more about its annual summer math camp, 6-8 p.m., June 8, at Blach Intermediate School, 1120 Covington Road.

Free placement tests will be given; the results will be valid for the next school year. Students can enjoy math games and refreshments.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
