Maria Villanueva, a senior at Los Altos High School, is one of three local high school students to win a four-year, $16,000 scholarship from the University Club of Palo Alto. She plans to attend UC-Berkeley.

Maria has a GPA of 4.17 and a balanced SAT score of 1260. She is active in student government, represented LAHS at Girls State and was chosen Homecoming Queen this year. She has been active in the Mountain View Police Explorer group, the Latin Dance Club and Girls for a Change.

She demonstrated leadership and compassion by organizing a small group of classmates to use their own foreign language skills to reach out to students who were recent immigrants and encourage them to participate in school activities. The eldest of four children, Maria will be the first in her family to attend college.

Solomon Wang, the son of Mary Tsai of Los Altos and Peter Wang of Mountain View, has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at George Fox University, Newberg, Ore. To be included, a student must earn a 3.5 grade point average or higher while taking at least 12 credit hours of classes.

Wang is a sophomore majoring in psychology.
