Famed composer and new Los Altos resident Denes Agay will have one of his pieces performed June 4 during the Composers Performance Ensemble in Palo Alto.

New Los Altos resident Denes Agay, a giant in the classical music world, will have his composition, “Rhapsody in Waltz Time” featured during a Composers Performance Ensemble, 8 p.m., June 4, in the Lucie Stern Community Center ballroom, 1305 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto.

The San Francisco Chapter of the National Association of Composers will sponsor the performance, also featuring Los Altos resident and composer Sondra Clark.

Recognized worldwide by generations of musicians and music teachers, the 94-year-old Agay was the first musical scholar to compile graded series of books of music by the great masters. As a compiler, editor and composer, he may be likened to a bestselling author, with more than 96 books to his credit listed on the Internet under his name.

His “Best Loved Songs of The American People” alone sells many thousands of copies each year, and his piano music collections have been used for decades by millions of teachers.

Fellow composer Clark described Agay as “understandably frail at his advanced age, but his wisdom and wit are charmingly intact, and he is ready to contribute to the rich Bay Area music scene by attending the June 4 performance.”

The Composers Performance Ensemble is a chamber group comprising violinist Kristina Anderson, pianist Miles Garber, soprano Kathleen Nitz, flutist Diana Tucker and cellist Kris Yenney. The performance will include new chamber works by Clark, Nurit Barlev, John Beeman, Joanne Carey, Nancy Bloomer Deussen, Lorie Griswold, Robert Hall and Carolyn Hawley.

Admission is $15 general, $10 for students and seniors. Tickets are available at the door.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
