DOROTHY ELIZABETH GRAY

Dorothy Elizabeth Gray of Mountain View died at home on May 5, 2005 at the age of 87. She leaves behind her beloved husband of 63 years, Gardner Gray, along with her daughter, Millicent Gray of Lodi, a son and his wife, Gardner “Jay” Gray Jr. and Beatrice M. Netter of Portola Valley, a granddaughter, great-granddaughter and her husband, Megan Heather Stein, Katie Amber Stein and Derek Stein of Lodi, and a grandson, Jeffrey Jamieson White of Simi Valley. She was predeceased by her daughter, Dulcie Ann Gray.

Dorothy was active for years in the Los Altos United Methodist Church and was a talented painter in the Los Altos Art Club. Dorothy was a resident of Mountain View for over 42 years.

Dorothy grew up in Oakland, California and graduated from Stanford University in 1939 with a chemistry major. She met Gardner at Stanford and they married in 1941 and lived initially in San Francisco. Dorothy’s career began as a lab technician in a medical office, but this career was interrupted bringing up her three children; Dulcie, Millie and Jay. The Gray family moved to Menlo Park in 1948 and later to Mountain View in 1962. Dorothy embarked upon a second career in the late 1950’s, as she became a primary school teacher in the Menlo Park School District. She taught school for 12 years and retired from this profession in 1971.

Dorothy and her family loved the outdoors and spent summers at their self-built summer home in Felton. Dorothy had a passion for swimming, gardening, hiking and fix-it projects. Dorothy loved dogs with independent dispositions and could look past their transgressions. Gardner and Dorothy traveled extensively during their retirement years and enjoyed the company of their dear friends and neighbors. Dorothy was the emotional center of the family and will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.

The family plans a memorial service in the near future at the Los Altos United Methodist Church and requests donations to your favorite charity in Dorothy Gray’s honor and memory. Please contact the LAUMC for more information at 650 948-1083.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
