La Voz, De Anza College’s weekly student newspaper, was honored for general excellence in two categories - for its newspaper and for its online publication - at this year’s Journalism Association of Community Colleges statewide convention held in Sacramento April 7-9.

The La Voz staff also won the following awards:

• Second-place on-the-spot sports photo, Steven Cabana, Milpitas

• Third-place investigative news, Jonathan Edwards, Berkeley

• Third-place editorial, La Voz staff

• Fourth-place on-the-spot editorial cartoon, Pedro Paulo Viegas De Sa, East Palo Alto

• Fourth-place online photo, Thu Di Ha, Fremont

• Honorable mention front-page design, Julio Lara, Oakland

• Honorable mention editorial cartoon, De Sa

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
