executive chef at Hyatt\'s Classic Residence

When Classic Residence by Hyatt in Palo Alto opens this summer, residents will be able to enjoy the culinary skills of popular local chef Gary Roth. Well-known for his work at the Los Altos Golf & Country Club, Roth will serve as the executive chef for one of the most prestigious luxury senior living communities in the country.

“This is a great opportunity,” said Roth, who lives in Los Altos. “It’s quite a large

operation.” Once the establishment is up and running, he said, he’ll be serving close to 800 meals a day.

Bringing more than 20 years of experience as a chef and wine buyer for country clubs, deluxe hotels and fine-dining restaurants internationally and domestically, Roth will join the opening team at what will be the premier senior living retirement community in Northern California. The community will be located across from the Stanford Shopping Center on 22.4 acres adjacent to Stanford’s campus.

Roth will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of food-service operations, including purchasing and preparation. In addition, he will supervise a team of employees and handle day-to-day operations of the community’s gourmet restaurants, which include a club-style dining room with courtyard for al fresco dining, a formal dining room and a bistro-style cafe.

As the executive chef and wine buyer for the Los Altos Golf & Country Club for more than 12 years, Roth was often recognized for his innovative cuisine,

including a cover story in Food and Beverage International Magazine on organic kitchen gardens and specialty rice dishes in 2003. The San Francisco Chronicle and San Jose Mercury News also featured stories on his achievements.

During his tenure at the country club, a private club with more than 700 members, he managed overall kitchen operations. Prior to that, he served as sous chef for Campton Place Kempinski in San Francisco, the San Francisco Ritz Carlton, the Hotel Du Palais in Biarritz, France, and Swissotel LTD in New York and Switzerland.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

When members of the Los Altos Village Association first created the summer movie nights, they anticipated an event that would attract more residents downtown as a way to promote business.

What they didn’t anticipate was an influx of middle schoolers, or that parents would use the weekly Friday night affair as an opportunity to drop off their children and have someone else (in this case, the Village Association) effectively watch over them.
