The Los Altos Rotary Club has scheduled “2005 Fine Art in the Park,” 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, in Lincoln Park in Los Altos.
Artist Tom Marlatt, whose colorful oil on canvas, “Embryo,” graces this year’s official art poster, will join 200 other artists in Rotary’s 30th annual show in Los Altos.
Rated one of the 10 best-selling presentations in California, the two-day show attracts artists from throughout the United States and features their fine art and quality craftwork including paintings, sculpture, photography, glasswork and jewelry.
Marlatt, from Los Gatos, has exhibited with the art show every year since its inception in 1976.
“I enjoy doing the Los Altos Rotary show because it has always been a very high quality art show and very professionally run,” he said. “I have built a following at the show over the past 30 years and it’s always a treat to have past clients and friends stop by and say hi.”
Marlatt uses a variety of brush techniques with an oil wash and palette knives. Each piece is done in multiple layers, sometimes up to 10, using transparent overlays one on top of another, taking 10 days to two weeks.
During his 32-year career as a professional artist, Marlatt has produced more than 3,000 paintings. His work is exhibited throughout the United States and internationally. Corporate collections include Bank of America, Apple Computer, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Hoover Memorial Building, General Electric, Amdahl Corporation, Sun Microsystems and First Bank of Manila in the Philippines.
“I describe my work as nonobjective abstract, meaning there is no specific image meant to be seen. I want the viewers to be able to use their imagination. As I am painting, I am thinking about composition, movement, depth, power and excitement,” Marlatt said.
Lincoln Park is located along Foothill Expressway between Edith and Main streets in Los Altos.
