The LAHS Instrumental Music Department is conducting its annual “Sponsor an Instrument” fund-raiser to raise money for the purchase and repair of school-owned instruments used by students in the wind ensemble, orchestra, symphonic band, jazz ensemble and Eagle Marching Band.

More than 30 percent of the 260 students in the music program use an instrument provided by the school. These instruments are used by percussionists, by those who play instruments too large to be transported (cello, tuba, bass), and by those who do not own their own instruments.

The average annual repair cost of instruments is $3,000-$5,000. In addition, $100,000 is needed to replace old equipment and to meet the needs of a growing department. New instruments needed include concert timpani, xylophone, chimes, concert tuba, bass trombone, euphoniums, French horns, bass clarinets, sousaphones, mellophones and marching baritones. However, the annual instrumental music budget for all expenses is just $4,000.

The LAHS Instrumental Music Department urges your generous support to keep the music playing. Make your tax-deductible contributions payable to “LAHS Instrumental Music Boosters” and send to Instrumental Music Boosters, Los Altos High School, 201 Almond Ave., Los Altos, CA 94022. Remember that corporate matching doubles your donation.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
