The Los Altos/Mountain View District of the Silicon Valley Association of Realtors (SILVAR) will present their Community Service Award to Joan MacDonald of Mountain View at a luncheon scheduled 11:30 a.m., May 11, at Michael’s at Shoreline in Mountain View.

The annual award, established in 1964, recognizes men and women who exemplify the spirit of volunteerism in Los Altos, Los Altos Hills or Mountain View.

MacDonald, an English teacher retired from Foothill and De Anza colleges, has served on the Community Health Awareness Council (CHAC) board in various positions since 1973, when she helped found the non-profit. The Mountain View Chamber of Commerce honored her as CHAC Volunteer of the Year in 2002.

According to SILVAR, MacDonald still assists students with college application essays and continues as a strong supporter of affordable housing initiatives in the community.

The award committee recognized MacDonald for her volunteer efforts in a variety of educational and humanitarian causes, but was “particularly impressed with her longevity with the CHAC,” said Josie Gambera, district chairwoman of SILVAR. “As a founder and continuing volunteer, her time commitment to CHAC has been amazing - it spans over 30 years,” said Gambera.

For information or luncheon reservations, call 949-9115.

SILVAR is a 3,500-member real estate trade association and homeowner advocacy group serving Silicon Valley and the mid-Peninsula.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
