Pixar scientist on ‘A Taste of Technology’
The Los Altos/Mountain View Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) introduces “A Taste of Technology!” at a tea scheduled 2-4 p.m., Saturday, at the Los Altos Youth Center, 1 N. San Antonio Road.
Danielle Feinberg of Pixar Studios, an AAUW Tech Trek Science Camp Leader, will discuss state-of-the-art technology with the audience of Tech Trek and Tech Time Science Club girls and parents.
Tech Trek is the California State AAUW summer program for seventh-grade girls. Tech Time Science Club for Girls offers hands-on science experiences to Girl Scouts in grades 4-6. The LA/MV branch founded Tech Time Science Club in 1992 with a grant from the AAUW Educational Foundation.
Previous participants in the AAUW science programs, presenters and parents, as well as those interested in learning about them, are invited to the free program. Reservations are recommended.

Hospital gala launches campaign
The El Camino Hospital Foundation has scheduled a gala celebration, “Above and Beyond,” Saturday, at the Los Altos Golf & Country Club. The evening will commence with a cocktail reception at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and the program at 7 p.m.
The celebration anticipates the October groundbreaking and provides an opportunity to recognize the lead donors, whose early contributions are helping to finance construction.
The gala serves a dual purpose as a benefit for the hospital’s many programs. These include the Healing Arts Program, which brings humor, art, dog, music and massage therapies to patients; the RotaCare Free Clinic in Mountain View, which provides health care to the underserved in our community; and its three dialysis centers.
Tickets are $250 per person. Black tie is optional.

Birdhouse Bash helps Child Advocates
Child Advocates is hosting its annual spring fund-raiser, the 2005 Birdhouse Bash, 2-5 p.m., May 21, in the gardens of a Los Altos home featured in the second annual Los Altos History Museum Spring Home & Garden Tour.
More than 100 handcrafted birdhouses created by local artists, designers and foster children will be displayed throughout the garden and sold to the highest bidders.
Child Advocates work with abused and neglected children in the Santa Clara and San Mateo counties foster care systems.
Tickets are $60 per adult, $20 for children 3-14.

Mars expedition subject of talk
Astronomer Nathalie Cabrol will give a nontechnical, illustrated talk on “The Mars Exploration Rover Mission: A Year of Exploration and Discovery” 7 p.m., May 18, in the Smithwick Theater, Foothill College, El Monte Road and Freeway 280, in Los Altos Hills.
The lecture is part of the Silicon Valley Astronomy Lecture Series.
For more than a year, two robot rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, have explored our neighbor planet Mars, sending back remarkable pictures and detailed information about its surface.
Cabrol, a member of the science team for the Mars Exploration Rover mission, will report on the ongoing work of the rovers and some of the discoveries they have made about the past and present of the red planet. The event is free and open to the public.

CSA fund-raiser remains a mystery
Community Services Agency of Mountain View and Los Altos has scheduled its second annual murder mystery theater fund-raiser 6:30-10:30 p.m., Friday, at the Crowne Plaza CabaƱa Hotel in Palo Alto.
The dinner-theater event will feature a cocktail reception, a silent and live auction, a sit-down dinner and live theater entertainment. This event offers participants a chance to play super sleuth while assisting CSA in its mission to serve those in need in the local community.
Tickets cost $150 and include the reception, dinner and evening’s entertainment. Those who choose to sponsor a table for $1,500 will receive seating for 10 guests and acknowledgment in CSA’s spring newsletter. Several other levels of sponsorship are available for businesses and corporations and come with a variety of benefits.

Gospel music festival for the needy
The Interfaith Network for Community Help is presenting its annual All Faiths Gospel Music Festival Friday and Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church, 3149 Waverley St., in Palo Alto.
Performers include the Stanford University Gospel Choir, the Pacific Islanders Cultural Heritage Choir and the Valparaiso Mormon Choir (Friday), the San Jose Jazz Society All Stars, Vukani Mawethu and the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir (Saturday).
Proceeds benefit the Interfaith Network, headed by Stewart Wobber of Los Altos, and its mission to help needy residents.

Rock ‘n’ roll subject of CSMA lecture
“Is Elvis Really the King?” That’s the question posed in the latest installment of the Community School of Music and Arts’ Classes w/o Quizzes Arts Lecture Series, set for 7:30 p.m., Friday, at the Mountain View arts center.
Foothill College music professor Robert Hartwell, author, pianist, historian and educator, traces the emergence of rock in the 1950s.

Hidden Villa slugs it out for Mother’s Day
Hidden Villa in Los Altos Hills has scheduled a Mother’s Day Concert featuring the renowned Banana Slug String Band, 5-7:30 p.m., Sunday, on the outdoor stage at the Visitors Welcome Center.
The Banana Slugs blend music, theater, puppetry and audience participation in their performances.
Based in Santa Cruz, members include Steve Van Zandt, Mark Nolan, Larry Graff and Doug Greenfield.
Concert tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students and seniors, and $7.50 for children 12 or under.
