Approximately 60 works have been selected among 128 pieces entered for this year’s juried art competition as part of Arts Alive month in downtown Los Altos. These works are currently on display at Main Street Cafe & Books, 134 Main St., through May 15.

The exhibited works include the top winners in the competition, including two “Best of Show” winners, “Spring Poppies,” by Los Altos resident Jerry Humpal, and “Rocky Shore” by Rosemarie Gorman of Mountain View.

The show, sponsored by the Los Altos Village Association, featured five categories: oil/acrylic, watercolor, mixed media, pastel and photography.

In addition to the best-of-show winners, other prize winners include:

• Humpal, also first in the oil/acrylic category, for “Dairy Creek, NZ.” Will Maller of Los Altos placed second with “Coe Park #1.”

• Millicent Bishop of Los Altos, first in the watercolor category, for “Yuba River.” Betty Davis placed second with “Unraveled.”

• Judi Keyani of Los Altos, first in the pastel category with “Arastradero Preserve.”

• Mathias Van Hesemans of Los Altos, first in the photography category with “Mount St. Helen’s Spirit Lake.” Karen Schreiber of Palo Alto finished second with “Elegy to the Family Farm.”

• Joyce Savre of Menlo Park, first in the mixed media category, with “Cathedral of Words ‘N’ from ‘Not War Series.’”

Of the 22 awards handed out at this year’s competition, eight (seven artists) went to members of the Los Altos Art Club. The competition was part of several Arts Alive activities that included mini-exhibitions at local businesses and a downtown banner program featuring student art.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
