Last year’s “Bird House Bash” featured some creative entries.

Child Advocates is hosting its annual spring fund-raiser, the 2005 Birdhouse Bash, 2-5 p.m., May 21, in the gardens of a Los Altos home featured in the second annual Los Altos History Museum Spring Home & Garden Tour.

More than 100 handcrafted birdhouses created by local artists, designers and foster children will be displayed throughout the garden and sold to the highest bidders.

While walking the grounds of this historic home, guests will bid on birdhouses in cleverly-named categories such as “Traditional Starter Homes,” “The Best in Modern Living” and “High Class Living for the Distinguished Buyer.”

This year, in addition to birdhouses, the organization will be auctioning one-of-a-kind garden and decorative art such as outdoor sculptures and fountains.

Birdhouse artists this year include Ken Rhodes of William Gray Designs; Bob Cooper of Portola Custom Builders, winner of the 2004 Best of Show Award; Dave Lofgren of Portola Custom Builders, winner of the 2003 Wackiest Birdhouse; and others. This year’s new award is the Best of Show- Non-Birdhouse Art. Other awards include Best Of Show-Birdhouse, Best Children’s Entry, Most Functional, Most Artistic, Best Architecture, Best Craftsmanship and Wackiest. The organization is accepting artwork submissions until May 13.

“We hope to match last year’s sell-out crowd of 200 community members and net $32,000 to benefit abused and neglected children in our local community,” said Toni Cupal, Child Advocates board vice president and host of the Birdhouse Bash. “As an organization that truly values and cherishes children, Child Advocates encourages guests to bring their children and family members to enjoy our spring event. We’ll provide childcare, children’s activities and entertainment that both adults and children will enjoy.”

In addition to live and silent auctions, the afternoon includes hors d’oeuvres; speakers; and entertainment by Yah-kee and Korbel, two Amazon Parrots that will perform animal and human impersonations, sing, ride bikes and do other tricks.

Tickets are $60 per adult, $20 for children 3-14. For more information, call Susan Bartlett at (408) 573-5674 or log on to www.cadvocates.org.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
