The investigation into the murder of a Los Altos High School student shot last September as he walked home from school remained cold Monday, despite a $10,000 reward offered last week to anyone with information about the case that could lead to an arrest.
Police said the reward incentive did prompt a caller to leave a tip this week, but the information was not significant enough to solve the crime.
After nearly seven months, police said they still have no suspects, no murder weapon and no leads about who gunned down 17-year-old Alejandro “Alex” Fernandez during a drive-by shooting near the corner of Rengstorff Avenue and Latham Street in Mountain View.
The Mountain View City Council voted unanimously to put up a $10,000 reward for any information that results in the arrest and prosecution of the person or persons responsible for the crime.
“We don’t have a lot of crimes of this nature in our town and when we do, we want to solve them,” Mayor Matt Neely said.
Police said Fernandez was walking in the area at approximately 10:30 p.m. when a gunman in a red or burgundy Honda Civic shot him twice. He was pronounced dead at Stanford Hospital.
The only clue to the murder seems to be the description of the vehicle, said Jim Bennett, public information officer for the Mountain View Police Department.
Police said they suspect the person or persons who might have information that could solve the crime are afraid to step forward because the murder may have been gang-related. Fernandez was known to be a member of the Sureño gang, Bennett said. Police do not know whether Fernandez was the intended target.
Anyone with information should call the anonymous 24-hour tip line (866) 570-8211.
