No charges have been filed against the 20-year-old driver who struck and killed a pedestrian on San Antonio Road April 2. Los Altos police are still investigating the midday accident that occurred as a pedestrian crossed San Antonio heading toward downtown from Hawthorne Avenue near Bank of America. He died at the scene.

Residents and friends made a shrine of flowers and notes at the location of the accident.

Sgt. John Hughmanick said it does appear as if the pedestrian was in the crosswalk when he was struck.

He would not release any other information pending the investigation.

“We have good information, but it’s premature to release (anything),” he said.

Police are seeking input from more witnesses before handing the case over to the Santa Clara County District Attorney for further investigation next week. The investigation is a routine procedure in collisions involving a death, Hughmanick said.

The district attorney will determine whether the actions of the driver should result in manslaughter charges based on the police investigation.

Hughmanick said police have interviewed witnesses who saw some of what happened. They hope more people will step forward with information to “complete the puzzle.”

Traffic-safety advocates say the accident proved their worse fears about the four-lane road, known for its 35 mph-plus speeds and heavy traffic volume, without the aid of a signal at many of the crosswalks.

City Traffic Engineer Tom Ho was scheduled to ask city staff to develop conceptual plans to calm traffic along San Antonio Road Tuesday night after the Town Crier’s press deadline.

Improving the visibility of crosswalks with paint, flashing lights or a pedestrian signal could be options, Ho said.

Police put up a sign at the scene of the accident asking anyone who may have seen a gray and black Ford SUV hit a pedestrian in the southbound lanes of San Antonio at 11:30 a.m. to call

Officer Scott Bunch at 947-2695 or the department at 947-2770.
