WILLIAM G. UTZINGER

William “Bill” Utzinger died of surgery complications on April 2, 2005. He was 78.

Born in Los Angeles on October 18, 1926 to Dr. and Mrs. Otto Utzinger. Bill grew up in the mining town of Ray, Arizona where his father was chief surgeon for Kennecott Copper. Coached by his father in the operating room, Bill took out his first appendix at age 18.

Bill attended Cal Prep in Ojai, CA and served in the Army Air Corps during WW II. He received his MD from Stanford in 1953 where he was chief surgical resident. Certified by the American Board of Surgery, he was a member of the AMA. Bill later served as Chief of Surgery and was Chief of Staff at Stanford Hospital during 1966/67.

An enthusiastic sportsman, Bill belonged to the Stanford Golf Club, Ladera Swim and Tennis Club and the Twin Lakes Duck Club. He loved skiing and served several times as physician to the U.S. Downhill Ski Team. Tennis, sailing and water skiing were also great pleasures.

Well known for his positive and optimistic nature, Dr. Utzinger was extremely compassionate and caring of his surgery patients. He never left a patient in the care of another doctor.

Bill is survived by his wife Margie of Los Altos Hills; daughters Lynn Balzhiser and Cathy Pfeiffer; sons Mark, Karl and David; his brother David and three grandchildren.

Memorial donations in Bill’s name may be sent to Interplast, 300 Pioneer Way, Mountain View, CA 94041.

A private memorial celebration will be held at a later date.

PHYLLIS WELLMAN

Phyllis Wellman (nee Phyllis Jeanne Kellogg) died suddenly on Sunday, April 3, 2005. Born June 18, 1954 in Seattle. At the age of 11 days, Phyllis and her twin brother Fred were so very fortunate to be adopted together by their loving parents, Bill and Marjorie Kellogg. After moving briefly to Washington, DC and then The Hague, Netherlands, Phyllis and her family settled in Los Altos Hills, California where she spent her school years. She graduated from Gunn High School in June of 1972.

Phyllis married Roy Wellman in 1977 and shortly thereafter they moved back to the Seattle area - initially to Stanwood. In later years, Phyllis then lived in Everett and most recently in her stunning Queen Anne apartment.

Phyllis was well known and loved in the medical community having worked as an office manager for a number of prominent practices in the greater Seattle area. Most recently, she worked at Dr. Sanford Wright’s office in Everett, where she relished playing the grand piano before starting her workday.

Phyllis was an enthusiastic sportswoman, excelling in skiing. She was an active member of the S’no Jokes ski club, enjoying many of their trips around the world. She also loved scuba diving, hiking, and cycling - accompanied in all of these by her bears.

Phyllis has now joined her father Bill who passed away in 2003. In addition to her hundreds of wonderful friends, Phyllis is survived by her mother, Marjorie van Rheeden Kellogg, her former husband Roy, her brother Fred and his wife Amy, her nephew Will, and her nieces Maggie and Rosie.

If desired, Phyllis may be remembered by gifts to the Salvation Army or the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle.
