Experts discuss sleep at Methodist church
The Family Resource Center at Los Altos United Methodist Church has scheduled a talk by Mark Rosekind and Dr. Debra Babcock 7-8:30 p.m., April 7, titled “Keeping Kids Alert, Sleep Challenges of a 24/7 Society.” The talk will be held in the Creekside Center at the church, at the corner of Foothill Expressway and Magdalena Avenue. The event is free of charge and open to adults in the community.
Parents will be introduced to the basics of childhood sleep needs, sleep states and stages, and sleep architecture. Common sleep disorders will be described, as well as their diagnosis and treatment.
Rosekind is the president and chief scientist of Alertness Solutions, a scientific consulting firm in Cupertino. Babcock is a board-certified pediatrician practicing in Los Altos and a member of the pediatric sleep task force for the National Sleep Foundation.

St. Francis presents ‘Beauty and the Beast’
A cast of 62 students is scheduled to present the St. Francis High School spring musical, “Beauty and the Beast.” Performances are scheduled for Friday, Saturday, and April 14, 15 and 16 at Raskob Center for the Performing Arts, on the school campus. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m.

Senior Matt Waters and junior Jillian Lawson have been cast for the lead roles of the Beast and Beauty. Sophomore Alex Vlahov plays the conceited Gaston, and freshman Jordan Cabezon is his dim sidekick, Lefou. The show also features senior Jimmy Bourque as Cogsworth the clock, freshman Brandon Montalvo as Lumiere the candlestick, and senior Yvette Holzwarth as Mrs. Potts.
Scholarships available for Latino students
PacifiCare’s Latino Health Scholars program plans to award 70 $2,000 scholarships to Spanish-speaking, bicultural high school students seeking careers in health care. In addition, PacifiCare will bestow Freedom Awards of $25,000 each on the two most deserving and qualified applicants.
Eligible candidates are high school seniors who are fluent in Spanish and English and maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Applicants must show proof of acceptance into a university, community college or accredited technical college and must be enrolled in an approved health care program at the time they receive the scholarship.
