Superintendent search down to two candidates

Los Altos School District Trustee Victor Reid III said Monday that trustees have narrowed the field of superintendent candidates to two finalists. Extensive background searches and interviews with people who know the candidates on their home turf will begin soon.

“We may come to a conclusion by April 11, but I’m not sure the background checks will be finished or a contract signed by that date,” Reid said. “Maybe we’ll have it all wrapped up by the end of April.”

Charter school opens Kuo-Kirsch Library

Bullis Charter School opened its library March 21. Children in grades 1 - 6 can use the library at lunchtime, and all classes have a set library time each week. The library is fully staffed by parent volunteers.

The families of Michele Kirsch and Felicity Kuo donated the library to the school. Inspirational quotations and children’s artwork hang on the walls. Silicon Graphics donated maple bookshelves.

Pete Doering, coordinator of library services in the Santa Clara County Office of Education, was a key advisor in the design and implementation of the library. Parent volunteer Jill Curcio serves as library chairman.

Montclaire schedules walkathon April 9

The Montclaire Educational Foundation has scheduled a walkathon 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a silent auction 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., April 9, at Montclaire Elementary School, 1160 St. Joseph Ave., Los Altos.

The event is the school’s biggest fund-raiser of the year, and the silent auction is open to the public. The walkathon theme is Monte’s Jungle Adventure. K-5 students are looking for sponsors for the laps they will walk.

The public will have an opportunity to bid on getaways to the Sierra Foothills, the Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay and the Four Seasons-Hualalei on the Big Island of Hawai’i, in addition to an overnight package at Santana Row. Sport tickets on auction will include San Francisco Giants games, the Oakland A’s, Sabercats Arena Football and San Jose Stealth Lacrosse. Autographed sports memorabilia will also be up for bids.

Toys at auction include a Rolli Rider balance-training bicycle, the doll Samantha from the American Girl series and a Harry Potter Lego set.

Many other desirable items and events will be auctioned as well.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

For the first time in five years, a public elementary school, Gardner Bullis, opened its doors last week in Los Altos Hills. For some, it was, metaphorically speaking, the last stitch removed from the old wound following the closure of the original Bullis-Purissima School in 2003.

For others, including the diehards who formed the successful Bullis Charter School, the sting of the Bullis closure lingers. But our sense is that for most Hills residents not part of the Loyola School coverage area, the opening of Gardner Bullis means the resurrection of a long-sought-after neighborhood school and the community benefits that come with it.
