BETTIE JAYNE MARIS

Bettie Jayne Maris, at rest March 16, 2005 at the age of 85. Loving mother of Kaaren Schoenberg and John Michael Maris and dear mother-in-law of Charles (Bud) Schoenberg. Proud grandmother of Brad (Myra) and Brian Schoenberg and adoring great-grandmother to Emma Jayne and Cole Michael Schoenberg. Bettie will be greatly missed by her family, friends and pets.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Odyssey Hospice, the Humane Society or a charity of your choice. Services will be private.

HELEN WARNER PUTT

Helen Warner Putt, born September 24, 1914, in New York City, died on December 27 at her home in Los Altos, surrounded by her loving family. Admired by all who knew her for her lively and youthful spirit, her keen mind, and her beauty and generosity, Helen will be greatly missed by family and friends. She not only showed us all how to live and age with grace, but also how to die with dignity and acceptance.

Helen Putt is survived by her husband, Gladyn Putt of Los Altos, her son Jack Shuck, and her daughter Linda Budowski, both of Oakland; and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. CAROL HOLLWEDEL

Carol Hollwedel, a lifelong resident of Los Altos Hills, 61 years of age, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2005, with her family by her bedside. Carol was a loving mother, caring wife, an incredible grandmother, a cherished sister and loyal friend. She made a difference to many people in her life.

Mrs. Hollwedel is survived by her husband of 39 years Denis, her daughter Michele, granddaughter Natalie Anderson and her sister Brenda Mann.

Arrangements were made under the direction of Spangler Mortuaries.

Services were held on March 23 at St. Nicholas Church. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in her name may be made to Pathways Hospice Foundation, 585 N. Mary Ave, Sunnyvale, CA 94085.

ROBERT TIERNEY

Robert (Bob) Tierney of Los Altos, at peace with his Father, March 21,2005. Born in Kansas City, Missouri October 19, 1920. Joined the the 9th US Army in 1942 and transferred to the 422nd Night Fighter Squadron as a Radar observer where he and his pilot, Paul Smith had 53 combat missions in a P-61 Black Widow fighter becoming one of the first night fighter aces in the European theater of operation. In 1949 he married Barbara Brauer and in 1954 they moved to Los Altos Hills and eventually Los Altos where they have resided for 56 years. He was a manufacturers representative and served as President of the National Home Furnishing Representatives Association in 1967. In the 1980’s, Bob established the Tierney Furniture Company which he ran until 2002. Besides his wife Barbara, Bob is survived by four children, Robert Tierney Jr. of Cottonwood, Arizona, Tim Tierney of Folsom, CA, Nancee Rembold of Mesa, Arizona and Terrence Tierney of Laguna Niguel,CA. He was pre- deceased by his son William Daniel Tierney. Also surviving is his sister Betty O’Hearn of Tucson, Arizona, Grandchildren Tara Walcott, Jennifer, William, Patrick, Sean-Paul and Sigrid Tierney. His wit and Irish humor endeared him to his loving family and many friends. He was always there to give advice or help the underdog. He had a happy long life. Friends were invited to attend a funeral mass Monday, March 28, 2005 at 10:00 AM at Saint Nicholas Catholic Church,473 Lincoln Ave., Los Altos. Interment, Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Los Altos. Arrangements under the direction of the Los Altos Chapel of Spangler Mortuaries. Donations to the American Cancer Society , Silicon Valley Central Coast Region, 1715 S. Bascom Ave., Campbell, CA 95008 or the St. Nicholas Catholic Church, preferred.

JOHN GAUDENTIUS DONOVAN, SR.

John Gaudentius (Gordon) Donovan, Sr. born December 6, 1914, died March 21, 2005 at age of 90.

John is survived by his wife of 70 years, Lucie, five of his six children, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Born in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn, New York, he would often comment that he was not aware of the great Depression because he and his family members had jobs and a house. An eternal optimist, John Donovan had a zest for life, a song in his heart, a whistle on his lips and a ready quip.

He worked for the steamship and railroad lines in Manhattan prior to and after his U.S. Army tour in World War II. Making the trek to California with lifelong friends William and Caroline Ackerman, he went to work for Lockheed in Burbank. One more trek brought him to Lockheed, Sunnyvale, from which he retired after over 35 years. He never lost his New York state of mind.

John Donovan always was working at something, from selling Christmas trees to repairing old VW’s to resell, or the back office guy for his wife’s shop, Donovan’s Boutique in Los Altos, for almost 20 years.

Patient, wise, always a willing ear, he stood like a rock for his wife and family. Now, we will hold tight with open arms knowing that Heaven has welcomed him. Shalom.

His family will miss him: his wife Lucie Petrella Donovan; his children Faith DeMasi, John G. Donovan, Jr. deceased, Hope Donovan-Bowles, David Donovan, Charity Kocher, Michael Donovan; his grandchildren John Joseph Donovan, Tracy Guinnane, Benjamin Rice, Frances Donovan, Gordon Ronco, Annie Donovan, Matthew Donovan; great grand children Brandy Guinnane, Margaret Guinnane, Fiona Donovan.

Services were held on March 23 at the Cusimano Family Colonial Mortuary, 96 El Camino Real W., Mtn. View. The funeral mass took place on March 24th at the Church of the Resurrection. Burial at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Los Altos.

ANN JOSEPH BOECKLING

Ann Joseph Boeckling, November 4, 1930 - March 19, 2005, was born in New York City. Ann graduated with honors from Grinnell College, Iowa in 1952. She moved to the Bay area in 1966. Ann retired from the California Employment Development Department. She was a member of AAUW, Foothill Congregational Church, and the Morning Forum of Los Altos. She served as a volunteer for Filoli, Baron Park Seniors, Friends of the Palo Alto Library, and Allied Arts. She traveled extensively in the United States and abroad, and enjoyed reading, bridge, music and theatre. Ann is survived by her husband of 52 years, Donald , son Thomas Boeckling of Alameda, daughter Cathy Olson of Sugar Hill, Georgia, and granddaughters Erika and Emma Boeckling of Alameda. A memorial service will be held at Foothill Congregational Church in Los Altos at 2:00 PM on April 9. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.

HELEN LYDIA URBAN

Helen Lydia Urban, a Los Altos resident of 48 years, passed away on Sunday, March 20, 2005 at Stanford Hospital at the age of 85, after an extended illness. Mrs. Urban was a homemaker and retired bookkeeper.

Born Helen Lydia Wolf, March 22, 1919 in New Leipzig, North Dakota. Helen was the loving wife for 56 years of the late Robert W. Urban and loved entertaining and dancing. She is survived by her son Robert M. Urban of Los Altos, two sisters: Ida Daniels of New Leipzig, ND and Laura Proff of Spokane, WA and one brother Thomas Wolf of Van Nuys, CA as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held March 25 at Spangler Mortuary, 399 S. San Antonio Road, Los Altos. Internment was at Alta Mesa Memorial Park in Palo Alto.

CAROL A. HIMMELHOCH

Carol A. Himmelhoch, born December 26, 1914 in Toledo, Ohio, passed away on March 7, 2005 in Grass Valley, CA. Her parents were Paul E. and Mary B. Alexander. Her husband was Ralph F. Himmelhoch. She is survived by her brother Richard P. Alexander, M.D. and sister-in-law Dodie plus eight nieces and nephews and twelve grandnephews and nieces. Carol’s siblings Mary Francis Alexander, Robert C. Alexander & Jean Alexander Lee predeceased her.

She attended the University of Toledo and received her Bachelor Degree in Philosophy, Bachelor Law and Jurisprudence. Carol was a member of the Bar in both Ohio and Illinois and practiced Corporate Law in Chicago, IL from 1950 to 1982. She was a member of the University of Toledo Alumni Association and Beta Tau Delta Sorority.

Upon retirement in 1983, she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and was a volunteer for the Community Health Awareness Council of Mountain View, CA until her move to Grass Valley, CA in 1995.

Internment at Willow/North Oregon Cemetery, Oregon, Ohio. As per her wishes, there was no Memorial Service. Contributions may be made to Community Health Awareness Council, P. O. Box 335, Mountain View, CA 94042.

Editorial

For the first time in five years, a public elementary school, Gardner Bullis, opened its doors last week in Los Altos Hills. For some, it was, metaphorically speaking, the last stitch removed from the old wound following the closure of the original Bullis-Purissima School in 2003.

For others, including the diehards who formed the successful Bullis Charter School, the sting of the Bullis closure lingers. But our sense is that for most Hills residents not part of the Loyola School coverage area, the opening of Gardner Bullis means the resurrection of a long-sought-after neighborhood school and the community benefits that come with it.
