Community reads ‘Kite Runner’

A “Community Read” of Khaled Hosseini’s “The Kite Runner” is scheduled Thursday, one of two events related to the book and its author as part of the 20th annual Writers Week at Los Altos High School.

Residents are invited to read Hosseini’s widely acclaimed novel and join in discussion groups, led by the English Department faculty that evening. The Thursday “Community Read” event will take place 7:30 p.m. at the high school.

For the second event, Hosseini will discuss his work 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, in the high school’s Eagle Theater.

Following his appearance, he will host a book signing. Copies of “The Kite Runner” will be available for sale.

Los Altos High School is located at 201 Almond Ave. The events are free and open to the public.

The novel contains subject matter that may not be appropriate for younger children.

SPARC plans Los Altos event

The South Peninsula Area Republican Coalition (SPARC) has planned an event for 6:30 p.m., April 6, at Chef Chu’s restaurant, 1067 N. San Antonio Road at El Camino Real, Los Altos.

GOP Assemblyman Kevin McCarthy, R-Bakersfield, will discuss Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s reforms, including redistricting, teachers’ merit pay, state retiree compensation and reduction in state spending when income falls.

McCarthy serves on the Joint Legislative Budget Committee and committees on National Defense, Technology & Jobs, California Infrastructure and Groundwater Quality & Availability.

Wildcat presentation at Foothill College

Foothill College has scheduled a wildcat presentation at 2 p.m., April 10, in Room 5015 on the campus.

The presentation will feature five live wildcats from Leopards, Etc. - a cougar, an African leopard, a king cheetah, an ocelot and a Canada lynx.

Each cat will be on stage as information about its habits, habitat and survival issues is shared with the audience. Individuals can learn what they can do to help save these animals from extinction.

Parking lot 6 provides the easiest access to Room 5015. Admission is $10 adults, $5 children, 12 and under.

Artist ’stars’ exhibited at cafe

Sixteen artists have been selected by five jurors for a Society of Local Artists (SOLA) “Stars” exhibit, running through April 14 at Main Street Cafe & Books in Los Altos.

SOLA Stars, a juried element of SOLA, offers participating artists an opportunity to advance their careers by having their art reviewed by leading Bay Area museum curators and directors.

Five jurors selected 16 artists from among 65 entering this year’s SOLA Stars program. These artists are among 456 members of Silicon Valley Visual Arts, producers of the annual Open Studios events.

Among the winning artists are Stanford artist Sukey Bryan, Palo Alto artist Julia Nelson-Gal, Mountain View artist Laura Deem and Los Altos artist Marjorie Law.

The 16 Stars winners represent mediums from black-and-white and color photography to oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings.

Silicon Valley Visual Arts is dedicated to developing visual arts in the Bay Area. The group lends support to nonprofessional artists by providing programs that connect artists with social causes throughout the region.

The group’s next Open Studios program, now in its 19th year, is scheduled for the first three weekends in May. For more information, log on to www.svopenstudios.org.

Federated Woman’s Club meets

The Federated Woman’s Club of Los Altos will hold its next monthly meeting 11 a.m., April 6, at Michaels at Shoreline, Mountain View. Lunch will begin at noon with the program following at 1:30 p.m.

Los Altos Police Officer Rod Sayre, who has been with the Los Altos Police Department for nine years, the last four as a crime prevention officer, will speak on ways to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of a crime.

CSA holding ‘Empty Bowls’ benefit

The Community Services Agency (CSA) of Mountain View and Los Altos has scheduled its 2005 Empty Bowls Soup Supper fund-raiser 4-6 p.m., April 17, at the Central Seventh Day Adventist Church in Mountain View.

CSA’s Alpha Omega Steering Committee Chairwoman Bonnie Nunke said this unique event benefits Alpha Omega’s rotating shelter program that provides short-term shelter to homeless clients actively seeking employment. Individual tickets are $15 and include dinner and a keepsake bowl.

Fund-raiser for Leukemia Society

A “Casino Night” fund-raiser will be held 7-11 p.m., Saturday, at Los Altos Youth Center, 1 N. San Antonio Road. All proceeds will benefit cancer patients through Team In Training efforts aiding the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Tickets are $25, including drink tickets, casino-style games, music and prizes.

American Legion seeks funding for programs

American Legion Post 558 of Los Altos is raising funds for a new Legion baseball program in Los Altos and Mountain View and a new community emergency preparedness program. The Legion will accept checks and stock donations payable to American legion Post 5589, P.O. Box 126, Los Altos 94023. Contributions are tax deductible. We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
