Science contest today and Thursday
The Synopsys Silicon Valley Science and Technology Championship is scheduled for today and Thursday at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center. Students in sixth through 12th grades will exhibit projects for judging by Bay Area scientists and engineers. The exhibit will be open for public viewing 5-6 p.m. Thursday.

Oak plans car-free day
Oak Avenue School’s next Walk/Bike/Scooter-to-School Day is Thursday. Every participant will receive a prize. The event will be canceled if it rains.
Young filmmakers screen their work
The Windy Hill Kids Film Festival makes its debut in Menlo Park April 9. The festival will showcase the work of film producers in fourth grade through high school.
Interested film producers in grades four through 11 can contact Windyhillfilmfest@yahoo.com for rules and an entry form. The deadline is Monday.
Films will be considered for inclusion in the following categories: drama, comedy, documentary, instructional, animation and music video.
Parents can help with peer pressure
Steve Johnson, S.M., Director of Character Education at Santa Clara University’s Center for Applied Ethics, is scheduled to lead a discussion on promoting positive peer interactions and guiding children to make good decisions despite peer pressure.
The Brown Bag Lunch event for parents, teachers and staff is scheduled noon to 1 p.m., March 24, in the multipurpose room, Loyola Elementary School, 770 Berry Ave., Los Altos.
How to parent a challenging child
Marci Schwartz is scheduled to speak on “Parenting the Challenging Child” 8:45-11 a.m., March 30, at the SELPA 1 CAC Coffee in the multipurpose room, Covington Elementary School, 205 Covington Road, Los Altos. Schwartz has helped many families in the past 15 years understand and manage behavioral challenges at home and in the community.
Attendees are invited to join the group for an informal lunch at 11:30 a.m. at Erik’s Deli Cafe in Nob Hill Shopping Center on Grant Road.

Student artwork goes on view
The Student Art Show, featuring artwork by every student in the Los Altos School District, is scheduled March 31 through April 3 at Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave. Children, parents, relatives, friends and the general public are welcome. Admission will be free.
Viewing hours will be 3-5 p.m., March 31 and April 1, and 1-5 p.m., April 2-3. Children are invited to have fun making art with a wide variety of materials, 1-4 p.m., April 2.
The Student Art Show is presented by the Los Altos Art Docents with support from the Los Altos Parks, Arts, and Recreation Department; the Los Altos Art Club; and the school PTAs. Volunteer art docents teach appreciation and hands-on art lessons to students in all six elementary schools.

School commute workshop scheduled
The Los Altos Traffic Commission has scheduled a school-commute workshop, 7-9 p.m., March 31, in the multipurpose room, Covington School, 201 Covington Road, Los Altos.
Attendees will receive information on the actions being taken to improve safety for children who walk and bike to school. They also will have the opportunity to express their concerns and suggestions regarding school commute issues directly to Los Altos traffic engineers, police officers, city councilmembers and school administrators.
De Anza spring quarter to begin April 4
The first day of spring quarter instruction is April 4. To enroll in spring classes, new and former students should apply to the college as soon as possible to receive a date and time to register.
Registration appointments for new and former students take place through April 3. Once students have been assigned a date and time to register, they may register online at www.deanza.edu or by phone at 917-0509 or (408) 777-9394.
Fremont crab feed to benefit science
The Fremont Union High School Foundation’s annual Crab Feed “Fun” Raiser is scheduled 5:30-9 p.m., April 1, at the Hinson Campus Center, De Anza College, 21250 Stevens Creek Boulevard, Cupertino. The event is co-sponsored by the foundation, the Rotary Club of Cupertino and De Anza College.
Tickets cost $35 and can be purchased at each school office or through the foundation office by calling (408) 773-1218.
Tickets are also available at the district’s Educational Services Center, 589 W. Fremont Ave., Sunnyvale. Tickets will not be available at the door.
Oysters will be served at an additional cost.
