Nonette Hanko, one of the founders of the Los Altos-based Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, was named “Woman of the Year” by 21st Assembly District representative Ira Ruskin last week.

Hanko of Palo Alto received the award for what Ruskin called “her remarkable record as a public servant whose volunteer career has spanned more than three decades.”

The ‘Woman of the Year’ award recognizes exemplary California women from each California Assembly District.

Ruskin presented the award to Hanko Thursday at his Los Altos district office.

Among her accomplishments, Hanko spearheaded the formation of the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District and served 32 years on its board of directors. She promoted the establishment and maintenance of 250 miles of trails and 26 open space preserves.

In Our Opinion

Editorial

We’ve recently covered the passing of two of this community’s most involved and committed volunteers, Lee Lynch and Billy Russell. They represented an era when people helped out, not so they could get their name on a building, but because it was simply the right thing to do.

There’s a new generation of volunteers hard at work right now in this community who are carrying on their legacy. The level of involvement in the recent Los Altos Relay For Life event bears this out.
